I haven't seen the TV version, but I generally agree with what you've said about the book versus the movie. I read the book long before I saw the movie, and I think it's much better.
At the point where Halloran took an axe to the chest, I believe I exclaimed, "Why do horror movie adaptations think they have to have a body count?!" in outrage. The book managed to be terrifying without any gruesome axe murders (apart from the backstory, which doesn't really count in my opinion). And the ending of the book was far more satisfying.
I was a little weirded out by Jack and Wendy having sex while their five-year-old son was asleep in the same room, but that's a fairly small complaint, all things considered.
