I've heard of Black and White. I may pick it up one of these days.
I would start with the first Wild Cards book (which is called simply "Wild Cards"). It has the "origin story" for the Wild Cards world, plus those of most of the major continuing characters, and some of the best writing in the series. The next few books are also quite good, but it gets grimdark fast.
Hmm, sounds intriguing, if not exactly that interesting. I always had a problem with superhero novels, since the comic-book hero elements usually fail. If you've got an entire book, there' no justification for bad background, downgrading and so forth. The concept sounds solid, but also (as you write) too simple and unrealistic. Somewhat like Harry Potter, actually. I'll look into it, I guess. After Lionheart, of course.

One book in particular I really liked was Black and White by Jackie Kessler and Caitlin Kittredge. You should give it a try!
