For tenth grade English class:
“Name your deepest fear.”
It was asking a bit much, I thought,
for Day One.
She ought to have included,
“Relate your most embarrassing experience,”
to keep the profoundly cliché and the clichély profound
together. I rose to the ocassion,
I bypassed the murky swamp of
guilt and doubt and regret (too provacative)
and death and indecisiveness (meaningless)
and settled for the irony
“Not having anything to say.”
