It's been awhile since I did a post.
Today's topic is Dragon Power for the NES.
Dragon Power is an Americanized version of Dragon Ball: Shenron no Nazo. There are many main differences between Dragon Power and Dragon Ball: Shenron no Nazo. First difference is , of course, is Dragon Power is in English and Shenron no Nazo in Japanese. Being made for the American market, Dragon Power is also censored where it is inappropriate such as Roshi asking sandwiches instead of panties.

Goku from Dragon Power.....or is an impostor?
Cover art for Dragon Power is more genric with a traditional Kung Fu fighter with a white gi with blue headband. Shenron is made more sinister with fire coming out of his mouth made generic to go with the cover art. Ironically with his appearance changed, Goku's name is not. Other characters' names are changed to be made more American such as Bulma to Nora, Yamcha to Lancer, Shenron to Dragon Emporer, and Oolong to Pudgy. Oolong is also more referenced as a child instead of a pig. Dragon Balls are renamed as Crystal Balls as well as the "Kamehameha" is now called "Wind Wave". The Flying Nimbous is known simply as Swift Cloud. Sound was also for the American release. Goku in the game made to resemble the cover art but some ,like Roshi, stay the same. Only thing unchanged, is the game play itself.
One is wondering why all these changes to a Dragon Ball game. Simply, Dragon Ball as yet to become a major property as it today. Changes were made to appeal to the American market as Dragon Ball was almost unheard of in the United States during Dragon Power's release in 1988. Bandai must decided to make an genric kung fu game to make sales. Dragon Power can count as the first Dragon Ball game in the US even thought it was made into Americanized genric kung fu game. The next would be Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout in 1997. Dragon Power is a collectible game to Dragon Ball Fans despite it's oddities. It's history being based on Shenron no Nazo and a good example of a game changed for a different market is why is appealing to collectors. Bandai will soon later find out late how the property that Dragon Power is based, Dragon Ball, will become a beloved series in the US where they didn't have to change as much.
