For those of you who were interested, I did read through most of
Saint Tail and
Strangers in Paradise--now that I've finished, I've got a few more things to say about both.
Saint Tail: I love this series to pieces, but there were a few things I found lacking and other things that just made me go 'wtf?!'. For example, in episode 25, they introduce a batshit detective who thinks it's TOTALLY OK to TASE THE FUCK out of underage children. And if that fails, there's no harm in trying to beat the shit out of and throw them all over the room. Regardless of whether or not you have cold, hard proof. Regardless if their mayor is the uncle. REGARDLESS IF THE MAYOR UNCLE IS IN THE FUCKING ROOM AS YOU AND THE UNDERAGE NIECE THROW EACH OTHER AROUND.
Ahahah, whut?
Also, episode 26 was a huge WTF. In this episode alone, we have:
- a grown man who claims to have fallen in love with two 14 year old girls (technically one, but he doesn't know that)
- this is after he hits her with his car.
- ...and follows her to school.
- did I mention this grown ass man is apparently old enough to not be in school anymore, and he's stalking a 14 year old?
- and to make matters worse, he stalks her to the school and bribes the headmaster into whoring letting her out of class to go on aDATE with him. For a whole week.
AND THAT'S NOT ALL! No, the filler episode even manages to throw a kink into the most adorable relationship in the show, which is Meimi's parents! Dad hypnotizes Mom into thinking she's a cat, just to show off the new trick to Meimi.
Now this may sound innocent enough, he's a magician after all--but hold on. Mom didn't have any say in the matter. In fact, in the wrong hands, Dad could be doing some really kinky shit and no one would be any wiser of the fact. When he snaps Mom out of it, she chases him around the house in an attempt to beat his ass, I would hope.
Seriously, with the anime being this old, I'm surprised rule 34 hasn't taken effect on these retarded aspects.
I suppose I should be grateful.
Other than that, it's still adorable. I'm kinda sad they didn't animate the extra stories--like Sawatari buying Seira her Christmas presents and resolving the 'Saint Tail or Meimi' aspect of the show.
Now.
Strangers in Paradise:
I was right to fear for David. So much bullshit drama, I would have thought I was watching a soap opera instead of a slice-of-life drama, like it originally was. Suddenly character developments start coming wayyyy outta left field, story lines that were stuck with for most of the series were suddenly dropped--naturally resulting in crater-sized plot holes.
The thing that bothers me most of all is that Freddy Femur gets redemption and a relatively unscathed exit to the series--but David is shat on every step of the way. EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. It does not matter how much sex he got in between, he still ended up with a bullshit fate that was wholly unnecessary. Moore really had something good going here, and he settled for less, which is a total shame.
Btw, Katchoo's "epiphany" over her liking sex with girls over David is fucking shallow. Not to mention, completely out of character. It's not him being forced into sleeping with Tambi that drives her away, it's the revelation that sex with Darcy was better than with David.
...no, what?
Great sex with a terrible person > ok sex with an awesome person?
Hell to the FUCK NO. Not to mention--where the hell did that...what the fuck did that have to do with her decision regarding the marriage? Sex =/= marriage. Katchoo loves David. She loves Francine as well, but she still loves David too. Not the perfect set up, but it was a genuine start for something better.
Blah. Just blah.
I will say though, Moore is fantastic with his character designs, and for the most part, you can really fall in love with his characters and the dynamics between them. He did tell an entertaining story, he just didn't seem to know how to finish it properly.
Too bad I'm way too late on the series to have fandom discussion, but...eh, I can vent at least.
Ikkicon preparations are coming along slowly but surely. Just have to get a few kinks worked out and it should all fall into place. I hope. D:
Anyhow, time for work now.
