Summary: Inuyasha sits with Kagome at the end of Chapter 187 and realizes that the beast within
him will consume his human heart and kill Kagome if he does nothing to stop it.

I was not planning to do so at this time. My piece expanded on the manga at the end of Chapter 187. I was
trying to follow the prompt since it seemed appropriate to Inuyasha's situation. What follows in the manga is the Ryuukotsei story. Totosai has told IY that in order to make Tetsusaiga lighter he must slay the dragon that his father could not slay. This is a coming of age story. Totosai said that when the sword was made from his father's fang that it was his father protecting him.
After the sword broke and his own fang was substituted
he had provide his own protection. In the story he is
given the choice of fighting as the monster without the
sword where he would easily win or to fight as a hanyou
with Tetsusaiga and take his chances. He chooses to fight with Tetsusaiga as a hanyou and Tetsusaiga rewards
by revealing its secrets. After he slays the dragon the sword is now his and not his fathers sword anymore.
Inuyasha and Tetsusaiga are now strong enough to face
most of their enemies without fear of Inuyasha losing himself to the beast.
The beast was out of control when it attacked the
bandits and Kagome could no longer stop him. I believe
that if Sesshoumaru had not come to stop him IY would
have killed everyone including Kagome at that point.
IY does realize this in the manga and it is concern
that he will kill Kagome that leads him to seek out
Totosai to make the sword lighter.
