“Sango?” Kagome kneeled beside the bloodied woman. Thankfully, she noted the wounds were superficial, and that most of the blood belonged to the oni left behind.

Unable to look at the miko, Sango turned her face away. “Leave me. Please, just leave.”

Kagome laid a gentle hand on her friend's shoulder. “No. I won't. Tell me what's wrong, Sango. Please.”

Minutes passed in silence. Then Sango shrugged her hand off.  “You don't understand. I almost killed her. Would have murdered a child.” The slayer brought her hands up to stare at them, seeing the blood and imagining the ghost of her intent there instead. “I-” tears began to slip down her cheeks unnoticed- “What have I become?”

Sucking in her breath, Kagome was interrupted from replying by Sesshoumaru's silent glide across the grass. The everpresent shadow of the girl accompanied him.  He soon stood before the slayer; blank, gold eyes took in the dejected posture. He waited.

Wishing he would not stay yet unable to hide from her crimes, Sango looked up to meet his calm gaze. She had promised him her life in restitution for her crimes against one he claimed as his. She could feel the watchful eyes of the girl she had wronged, but didn't look away from the Daiyoukai. She didn't deserve to look upon innocence anymore.

“This Sesshoumaru is not an instrument to be used. I shall not become the hanyou's weapon. Neither will I mete out the penance for your weakness.”

Gasping as if struck, Sango lowered her eyes in shame. Kagome's hand returned to her shoulder, but this time she hadn't the strength to refuse it.

“It's okay, Sango. We'll make it through this together,” Kagome promised in a hushed whisper.

It was the voice of the child who reached into the despair that threatened to encase Sango's heart in an acre of ice.

“Rin knows.” Rin stepped forward after a glance toward her protector. Gently setting a hand on top of Kagome's, Rin kneeled in front of the torn woman. “Kohaku ... He hurts inside. Rin doesn't want you to hurt like him. It's okay. Rin forgives you.”

Shocked, Sango could only stare as Rin threw her arms around the slayer. It was swift, a tightening of arms that she could only hope to feel days later, and then Rin was gone. Pulled back into the protective embrace of her inuyoukai guardian.

And then they were gone, leaving the two women in the clearing. The lingering warmth of a child's embrace the only reminder that something couldn't be tainted, not even by the evil that surrounded them.

Resolve hardened in Sango's heart. She'd forgotten, if only for a moment, but now she knew. For her, now, for that little girl, she would fight. The ghosts of the past were too easily warped. Too often used to hurt and pervert her heart. But for the innocence, Naraku would fall.
