Edward's dismissal was so distracted, so noncommital, that it was hard to tell if he heard it at all; a weaker or more clingy person may have felt slightly incensed towards the notion of one's lover blowing them off with their nose pressed to the inside of a physics text (is that upside-down?), but Alfons knew better.
He knew that Edward, despite his earlier actions, would be still awake and still reading when he returned...moved across the room and sitting less than a metre away from the front door.
