☆SOUNDLESS

The dark; the pushing transparent energy of the night- and as always the soft glow that the sparks of twilight left behind. Ink; the water song; the wet grass and mobbed noises off in a more dangerous part. It was quiet but not particularly peaceful. Quiet was enough, though- enough to collect and go back. Link sat with his knees to his chest, getting a feel for the night and watching the silver in the sky move, almost invisible, whip-like.

He shifted; felt tired and tried, about everything- all his wounds still singing out, even worse now that he was sitting in stillness. It just seemed a surreal contrast- the memory of violence exploding like melody over his abdomen, his arms, and now the sound of silence was like an ocean.

Midna, this time, had been- actually worried- her echoing voice had trembled like it was supported on light, and her eyes had shaken. As they'd stumbled out of the Temple of Time, back through the Sacred Forest, she'd been completely and dizzyingly there. He was grateful to have her next to him, so concerned, but it was unsettling. When had she started to care so much?

Now she was somewhere behind him, watching the moon with wide red iris and a mind that straddled that line between beat-down exhaustion and midnight alertness. He half-looked over his shoulder. "Hey, Midna," he called.

She moved her eyes in attention. Link rarely spoke, and when he did his voice was winter-keen- a welcome distraction from the silence. "Yes?" she asked.

Link could tell from her voice that she was still rattled. He smiled for her, smiled so she could see it. "It's done, at least," he said, without clarifying what "it" was.

But they'd been together long enough that, whenever they talked, it was familiar- like they were continuing a speechless dialogue. She sighed- the echo of her voice angled against the dark- and glided, floated over in front of him. "It's not," she said, folding her arms. She lowered her eyes; her expression smoldered low in irritation.

"Well, this part is," he said, laughing; "It doesn't matter- I'm still alive."

Midna looked up at him, her expression snapping- her eyes alight with bruised blue fire, her mouth suddenly fierce. "Don't say something stupid like that," she said sharply.

Link almost winced- he settled back, palms in the grass, uncomfortable, not knowing how to navigate the conversation. A pause; the sound of insects swelled, radiated like an itch. He looked back up to her, eyes quiet. "It's what I have, though," he said. He reached his hand up to rub his eye; and then he looked away from her. "If it's always this way- what else can I tell myself? Or tell you."

Midna's expression softened like night- like gray sun melting down to darkness. She moved down so that her eyes would be level with his. Maybe she was actually curious- maybe she was worried that he would slip back into his usual silence. "-Why do you do this?" she asked; "Why do these people actually deserve your help?"

The normal brightness- the cheer- on his face was now turned down in a thoughtful frown. Slow music, some kind of atomic drizzle falling soft in the space between them. Blue on red, his eyes met hers. "It's not about- deserving," he said, slowly. "It's not about saving anybody, either. I just- I just can't leave all these people in the dark."

Midna's response was so fast he didn't even have time to think, and neither did she. "I would leave all these people in night forever," she said, "If it meant that you would never be obligated to this."

His eyes swept over hers in a calm, azure movement- the fire and defiance never left her face. Everything glowed softly; it didn't come as a surprise to either of them, really, that they would both feel this way- they had been companions too long not to understand the things they meant in silence.

Hahaahahacoughcoughahem, is it weird that I always do strange things with prompts?

Thanks for reading! :D
