Apping Meme
1. Kurosaki Hisoka/not_pmsing (January 2006 - 81.8% (36-8))
SO I've told an abridged version of this story a few times, but here's the full thing (if I remember everything correctly). I have Biz on my RL flist, so I knew about CFUD when it started. I followed it briefly, checking on the main comm every now and then, but I didn't really get into it until the fall of 2006; I think one of the catalysts was the Riddle-Cal incident. But even if I was following it a lot more closely, I was still too scared to app! Therefore, I just lurked. >:
Anyway, I've known Shuichi and Tatsuha-mun online for a while; we uh, met through some original RPs waaaaaay back when. Those RPs had mostly died by now, but we still kept in touch via AIM (those were the days before gchat, yo). So when I got back into CFUD, I pimped it to both of them and once they were hooked, I went "8D 8D You guys should app~~" This was probably around late November. They made faces at me for being a horrible enabler, then said fine, but qualified it - they'd only app if I did too. I made faces at THEM for that, then went "But who would I app? DDDD:" I'd usually only played guys up until then, and I liked the sarcastic ones, but who to app?
My main fandom at the time was actually Naruto, but it was so popular I didn't want to try apping anyone. So after flailing at Shuichi and Tatsuha for a while longer, I dug around my hard drive for other series. This is when I admit that when I apped, I'd only seen the anime and read scans of YnM up through volume 5 because that was all sakura-crisis.net did. o-orz >_> I'd read theria's translations for the rest, b-but yes. i r horrible person yes i am ._. But anyway, I was like "What's Yami no Matsuei and when did it get on my hard drive-ohhhh, that series." I vaguely remembered that Hisoka was a tiny snarky bitch, so I put him on my list.
...and then I reread the series and remembered how much I'd loved him. Whoops. I remembered that he'd been apped before, so I went back through the archives and found all of the apps, read the crit, and tried to think of app ideas. I was going back to Taiwan for a family vacation during Christmas and would get back just in time for the January app round (by that I mean about a week before, but I didn't know how long it would take me), so I had to finish my app before I left. The first draft didn't take that long once I sat down and wrote it, and then Tatsuha beat it into shape. ♥ After making "you said you'd app with meee" whining noises at Tatsuha and Shuichi one last time, I went on vacation.
I got back and poked at my very patient friends. Shuichi said she wouldn't have an app finished by the round, but Tatsuha was almost done! Anyway, we both sent them in and I began spazzing the second I hit the send button, afraid that I'd get weeded or it'd be a dup (because he'd been apped like three times before) or SOMETHING. >: Long story short, I had the day off when my app went up and spent the whole day hyperventilating. Tatsuha's app ended up getting weeded, so ironically I was the only one of us three who apped/got in. IS THIS KARMA FOR BEING A HORRIBLE ENABLER I have no idea.
Lolz I talk too much, but even though some of my earlier play with Hisoka makes me cringe, I'm pretty happy about it and he's my baby. Never dropping him unless I drop out of the game completely.
2. Akane Tendo/stop_mallettime (April 2006 - 67.2% (41-20) and May 2006 - 80.0% (36-9))
After Hisoka's nervewracking app process, I told myself I was never apping again dfjaskl;hlijsj. I kept to that promise for about four months, but then I kinda started wanting a girl to play, to balance out Hisoka. And then Ranma-mun pimped out the msn group with scans of the ENTIRE RANMA SERIES. I'd only read about 14 volumes, so I was like "What the hey, I'll skim through it when I have time."
...I read all 38 volumes in two days omg never doing that again @_@ The Ranma females are strong and awesome, so I knew I wanted to app one. >: My first choice was actually Ukyou, but there'd been an apper the previous round who said they might be reapping, and since I'm a wimp I was all "lolz no." But when I went back to the series to look at the other girls more closely, I remembered how much I liked Akane, even when she was beating up Ranma without listening to his side of the story first.
Sooo I started writing up an app. It was slightly harder to come up with ideas than it had been with Hisoka, but it wasn't horrible. I bit the bullet and sent it to Ranma-mun for betaing because I wanted a voice check, and was terrified that he'd say it was completely wrong. He didn't, I revised, and I sent it in after flailing at more people.
I was at school when the first app went up, and came back to find myself at 65-ish%. The rest of the evening was spent refreshing wildly and watching as my percentage went up slooooowly, then shot back down when one person voted me out. T-That day, I learned that it takes 2+ invotes to cancel one outvote ahahaha |D;
ANYWAY, I was rejected but I really, really liked Akane so I knew I'd be trying again. And then Ranma-mun posted to CFO about a hiatus and I was like "OH SHIT I have to send him my app for betaing before he leaves ahhhhhh" and I wrote something in ten minutes that ended up being my second and final draft.
I probably didn't get Akane as settled into camp as first as I could have, because her voice didn't come as easily to me as Hisoka's did. But even if I don't play her as much as my other characters (for every three to five threads they have, she usually has one or two), I still really like her, and playing off the rest of the Ranma cast is AWESOME. She's first or second on my drop list if something happens IRL, but hopefully that won't be soon. I might also drop her if the rest of the Ranma cast drops, but other than that, I'm pretty happy where she is right now.

...like I told Tatsumi, I was thinking of writing this meme, "but aside from Hisoka and Akane, the reasons for apping would be like "...and so I PMed _____ and said `hey tell me not to app so-and-so it would be a bad idea >:' and they said '......8DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD'"" THAT'S THE SHORT VERSION but I like to talk so here's the long version.
Rikuou got in as Ahiru in June and because I'm an IRC stalker who likes putting all the nicks of all my canonmates on ping, I added it! ...so I was pinged when Shinn, who'd watched the first five episodes of Tutu that an audience member had pimped on CFO, wanted to know where to find the rest of the series. I was curious after Rikuou said it was all on Youtube, so I downloaded the first five episodes too!
...duck socute I was hooked before that first scene even ended T^Tb When I first watched the series, I was like "I know my type is Fakir but he's a real jerk Mytho's so much nicer I WON'T FALL FOR THEIR COOL DARK STOIC GUY TRICK" a-and then he fed the duck. Damnit Princess Tutu, why you gotta know how to hit my weak points. >: So I marathoned the whole series, and when I finished I IMed Shuichi (who uh, didn't know the series at ALL) and was like "tell me not to app from Tutu D:."
After she called me crazy for wanting a third, she asked me why it'd be a bad idea. I went on a long rambling explanation of voice issues and handling the spoilers might be hard and could I play someone who was such a jerk etc etc and by the time I was done, I'd half-convinced myself to app him already. SO REALLY, people don't even really need to enable me; I enable myself ;___________; But I was still wavering, and over the next few weeks the chan had many a Princess Tutu discussion because Ahiru is the best way to pimp Tutu ever cuz she's awesome and adorable.
...in the middle of such a discussion, Shinn and Impulse PMed me almost simultaneously with "We'll app ____ if you app Fakir," I went "bzuh," and then they topped me. :/
Writing Fakir's app was REALLY hard, which is probably why I got voted out the first time. I wasn't happy with it when I finished, but I didn't want to think about it anymore either. Also, I wasn't totally comfortable with his voice for the first draft, which really showed. Anyway, spaz attacks about potential dup batches because an anon had asked me to beta a Fakir app aside, I got voted out and knew I was going to reapp because I loved the ballet retard. Mytho made my second app awesome and I woke up one morning to around 80% in and went "oh crap I need a journal name and icons."
I occasionally have emo moments about Fakir's voice/how I'm handling the spoilers, but overall, I'm pretty comfortable with him now. He alternates between being a total spammer and only having a few (long) threads a week, but he's also one of my pet retards and I wouldn't drop him unless everyone else in the cast dropped (loev Rue ;;).
4. Kannuki Wakaba/beautytopsthe (December 2006 - 87.5% (56-8))
Sooooo apparently, after I got in with Hisoka, I was somehow interesting enough (you guys are such liars .////.) that other people wanted to app YnM! So we had an awesome cast after the July counselor round, when Tatsumi joined us. When the December 2006/January 2007 counselor batch was announced, we started whoring really hard for more of the counselors in YnM, including Terazuma. He was one of my favorites, and there was so much people could do with him in camp. XD
It had come up before in IRC though, that he'd probably need a Wakaba in camp to help keep him in check, only she'd be less likely to be apped because she was just a normal "^_^" dead girl. I was sad, because I really, really wanted a Terazuma. >: Anyway, I was doing a brief review of canon, reread the beginning of the Gensoukai arc, and was like "hahaha someone could totally do a database joke with Wakaba because lolz Gatekeeper for a digital world."
But backing up, before this I'd mentioned to Yuma and Saya once before that I was sort of considering apping Wakaba, but then I never did, probably because Princess Tutu ate my brain. Now that counselor apps were imminent though, I PMed them and went "...disable me from apping Wakaba D:" AND THEY DIDN'T, so evil.
Anyway, this happened about a week and a half before apps opened and right before I went home for Thanksgiving break. I MAKE REALLY GUD LIFE DECISIONS, GUYS. I wrote her app really fast and sent it in, thinking that if I got out, at least maybe it'd encourage counselor apps? >: Because I WAS reapping if I didn't get in.
...highest app percentage I'd ever gotten, what the hell! Wakaba was the first minor character I ever played, so for a while I was shaky about her reactions or about how to deal with her backstory. However, her voice comes to me really easily now and even if I primarily apped her for selfish reasons (Terazuma and okay, I just wanted to be able to tilde ICly), I love her lots now and don't want to drop her either. She's actually probably more self-sustaining than Hisoka, because she isn't as inclined to emo and makes friends more easily, but that's neither here nor there~
5. Cecile/inurbase (March 2007 - 96.0% (48-2))
This story can be summed up as: it's all Caesar's fault. >: No, really. Caesar was the first Suikoden character and started a maaaaassive landslide. Also, I freely admit that I'm the worst Suikoden cast member ever because I've never played any of the games. Failure is meeeeeee sry guys ;;
So I played with some of the Suikoden people (ilu for drooling on Fakir, Caesar) and thought they were kinda cool! And they pimped the first six volumes of the manga, which I downloaded but didn't read because I was busy. They said it was a crying shame that they didn't have any of the girls in camp, because they were awesome and full of topping-ness. On the plane home during winter break, I was really bored and thought "I'll read some of the volumes of Suikoden III to kill time."
...and then it made me cry in the first volume and the art was really pretty so I read everything I had and whined at Caesar about getting more because my college bookstore didn't have it. I pondered apping Chris for a few seconds because the icons would be REALLY PRETTY, but it was more of a whim, and I wasn't comfortable apping from something I hadn't read all of. I'm glad I didn't think of it seriously either, because our Chris is awesome. ♥ Cecile was also adorable in the first six volumes, but she didn't show up too often, so I just. Went "DDD: want more Suikoden" but otherwise went on with my life.
Then a week or two before apps opened again, Chris started scanning the rest of the series. A-Again, I make good life decisions; I read the rest of it the second it was up and was mercilessly enabled by Saya and Yuma YET AGAIN. I finished the app a day before apps opened and still have no idea how I got such a high percentage. T^Tb
Cecile is adorable and I love her a lot! Sometimes it's hard to play her because I'm not sure how to word things, because her appearances in the manga are generally very similar to each other. But it's fun playing her and the only reason I'd drop her would be RL issues or if Thomas dropped. Loev my loli ♥
AND THAT ENDS MY REALLY LONG APP BABBLE I wrote like 400+ words per character someone please shoot me. Also, I'm currently happy with my pseudo-balance, so I probably won't be apping for a while.
