Character Name: Timothy Hearst
Canon: D Gray Man
Point taken from canon: 184
Age: 9
Gender: male

Appearance: There are several pictures of Timothy on the wiki page I linked below, but I’ll also include a short description.

Timothy is a short kid, coming in at 131 centimeters (about 4feet 4 inches). He has light-blue-ish hair, somewhere in-between teal and aqua, which looks almost mullet-ish with the short and spiky part on top and two long pigtails in back. He also has brown eyes.

He wears an Exorcist uniform, just like the others, but his has been modified a bit. The coat is the usual one, but instead of pants he has knee-length shorts. Also, he has roller blades instead of shoes. It’s all in the style of the most recent uniform change for the Exorcists: black with red trim and the Exorcist badge.

One final thing to note is that he has a large jewel in the center of his forehead, which is the same shade of blue as his hair. When he activates his Innocence, the jewel turns into a spot of bright light with a strange mark in the middle. This mark can be seen here: http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090508222320/dgrayman/images/thumb/3/34/TimothyDivinePossession.jpg/175px-TimothyDivinePossession.jpg

Background: http://dgrayman.wikia.com/wiki/Timothy_Hearst

Personality: Timothy is, just as his age would suggest, very childish. He hates homework, and he will do anything to get out of doing it. By far he prefers playing pranks, his favorite prank being ‘grab a woman’s boobs and laugh at the funny faces she makes.’ He’s also good at hiding, and he will spend hours on a roof somewhere if only to avoid being found by his caretakers. He lives in the moment, and it seems like he doesn’t really care about what happens next year, or even next month. He wants to have fun now, and he will have fun now, even if there’s work to be done.

This, of course, makes Timothy very, VERY immature. He doesn’t see the fault in his ‘live in the moment’ attitude. In fact, he doesn’t see the faults in anything he does. Ever. In his mind he is always right, and if something goes wrong then it’s someone else’s fault, because his ‘amazing plans’ could never be wrong. Along with that, he has a hard time admitting someone else is right. If someone does find a problem in his behavior, he gets angry and starts yelling and saying how stupid stuff is. Tantrums are not infrequent.

But despite his attitude problems and his anger issues, Timothy does learn from his mistakes. When something goes wrong he’ll claim that the problem was something else, but he does learn from the experience. Then the next time that situation comes around, he knows to try something else. For example, if he plays a game of soccer and loses, then he whines about the other players cheating. But at the same time he might see that they’re slower to respond when he kicks the ball to the left, so he’ll start doing that every chance he gets to try to win. Similarly, this is how he learns to fight Akuma: he tries different methods until something works, and then he keeps doing what works.

The main problem is that Timothy doesn’t like being told that he’s wrong. He is wrong quite a bit, since he’s just a kid and is still learning everything. But he doesn’t listen to people when they try to correct him, and he’s pretty bad about following initial directions too. Trial and error seems to be the most effective way for him to learn, as while he doesn’t take to outside criticism well he does seem to be able to self-evaluate and come up with other plans.

It’s also important to mention that Timothy is a sneaky bastard. He loves being in charge, and if he can exploit a weakness he will. The perfect example of this is when he first becomes an Exorcist: he knows that the Black Order really needs him, so he uses this to his advantage and demands that the Order pays for all of his expenses (prior to being found, he had racked up some debt by stealing pieces of art) and fund the orphanage he grew up in. This became a bargaining chip, as he said he wouldn’t join unless those things were paid for, and he used that bargaining chip well. It’s best not to let Timothy know he has the upper hand, because he will milk that for all it’s worth.

However, Timothy doesn’t just use his cunning for personal gain. While he does like getting nice things for himself sometimes, he prefers to use his power for the greater good. Prior to becoming an exorcist, Timothy used his powers to get money to keep his orphanage open. He feels the best about using his powers to help the people he cares about, and he when push comes to shove he puts them before himself. This doesn’t mean that he isn’t selfish, though: he does do things simply because he wants to, and he can be very selfish when it comes down to playtime versus work time (namely, he hates working hard if he doesn’t have to). But in a serious situation, he does buckle down and do the right thing.

Timothy also has some pretty serious issues, most notably that he’s been forced to grow up well before his time. To start off with, he has daddy issues. His father was a jewel thief, and he got Timothy caught up in his crime spree by forcing Timothy to swallow a jewel in an attempt to hide evidence. And when his father was sent to prison, Timothy was sent to an orphanage. Because of this, Timothy does not think well of his father, and he has a serious disregard for male authority figures. He’s more likely to disobey a man than he is a woman, thanks to the ‘wonderful’ job his dad did parenting him.

And even though he’s only nine years old, he’s been drafted into a war against evil. Every fight he’s in is a fight for his life, and every moment could be his last. While he certainly isn’t the first child soldier in this series (the Black Order seems to like taking them in when they’re young, actually), it’s still a lot for him to deal with. Surprisingly, he copes with this responsibility pretty well. Perhaps it’s because he IS a child, and he can look at it through a child’s eyes. He does take his responsibility seriously, but at the same time he seems pretty upbeat about it. For example, when he finally accepts that he has to become an Exorcist, he’s all smiles and actually uses the situation to his advantage. While he is initially scared of leaving his home for good, he does eventually accept it and go along with it.

However, Timothy isn’t always the ‘big damn hero.’ In fact, he’s a bit of a crybaby at times. When a situation is far too scary, or when he actually gets hurt, he’ll bawl like a baby. Small cuts turn into “I’M DYING BAWWWWWW” and extremely stressful situations will sometimes end in tears. It offers a stark contrast to the brave front he puts up, too: he could be saying “don’t worry, I got this” while tears are streaming down his face.

Timothy also hates being treated like a kid, even though he really is one. He’s just getting to the age when he’s aware of what’s being said around him, and he can tell when people are trying to talk over him, like he isn’t even there. He hates it when people try to make decisions about him without even consulting him, especially if it involves life-changing choices. Case in point: when Kanda and the head of the orphanage are discussing what to do with Timothy, Timothy yells at them for not even asking him what he wants. He may still be a kid, but he wants to be treated like a mature adult, and in many ways that demand for respect makes him all the more immature.

These two sides of him- his bravery and his immaturity- show just how out-of-place he really is. This war he has gotten himself mixed up in is definitely no place for a kid, and yet they need him so badly right now that they’re willing to throw a child into the middle of battle. His childhood has very much come to an end, regardless of how he feels about it. And while he knows he has to be brave like an adult, he still has a tendency to hold on to those childish parts of himself. When it comes down to it, Timothy is just a boy caught up in an adult’s world.

Abilities/Strengths: As an Exorcist, Timothy has a holy weapon called Innocence. His Innocence is Tsukikami, which manifests as a large blue jewel in his forehead. This Innocence actually has several different abilities.

The first ability simply allows him to possess the body of another person. While he possesses them, that person ‘falls asleep,’ so to speak, and they don’t remember anything that happens while Timothy is in their body. Timothy also seems to be able to use any abilities that person can use normally. For example, at one point he possesses Howard Link, and he is able to use his special paper slips, which seem to be magical in nature. He’s also able to use Link’s other weapons, which leads me to believe that he gains the person’s muscle memories as well. But it’s worth noting that this isn’t an actual activation of his powers. It seems to be more of a secondary power that he gained as a result of getting his powers, as he can use it without activating his Innocence. (Also it didn’t hurt Allen when he possessed him once, and Innocence normally hurts Allen, which is why I think this power doesn’t technically count as activating Timothy’s Innocence.)

The second ability is the first actual release of Timothy’s Innocence. When activated, it devours the evil inside of an Akuma and turns it into a holy vessel, which Timothy then possesses. While Timothy controls the Akuma’s body, he can use holy versions of the Akuma’s original power, and his attacks hurt other Akuma (and presumably Noah, when he grows strong enough to fight them, but he’s not at that level yet). Once he leaves the body of the Akuma, the Akuma is considered purified and passes on.

His power actually allows him to defeat Akuma in two ways: by initial possession (which purifies the soul and allows the Akuma to pass on), or by using a possessed and purified Akuma to attack other Akuma and defeat them. He can only manage Level 2 Akumas right now, but each successful purification and possession makes his powers grow stronger.

This power gives him great versatility. He can essentially take over any creature and use their powers to fight, which allows him to change his strategy to fit any battle he might end up in. Furthermore, he can avoid a battle completely if he really needs to: once he possesses an Akuma they are purified, and they aren’t a threat anymore. This can be much more effective (and sometimes safer) than having a long drawn-out battle with an Akuma.

Also, Timothy’s Innocence is a Parasite-type, which means that his Innocence is within his body (instead of inside a weapon, as is the case with most Innocence). This is handy because it is virtually impossible to separate him from his Innocence. While weapons can get stolen, lost, or destroyed, Timothy’s Innocence is safely inside his body. And because of the nature of his powers, he can just stash his body somewhere and possess people or Akuma to do what he needs to do. Then there’s no risk of his body being hurt while he fights.

Timothy has other strengths besides his power, too. He is one crafty kid, and he is really good at sneaking around and staying hidden. His shortness helps here as well, since it allows him to slip into small places that an adult wouldn’t be able to reach. This makes him a very good thief, as he can steal things and slip away into the darkness.

He’s also very agile, even moreso than a kid normally is. He can do flips and jumps with ease, and he can dodge around attacks from larger enemies. It’s not stated if this is something he can normally do or if it’s a side-effect of his powers, though.

It’s also worth noting that Timothy is very brave. He may be a bit of a crybaby, but in the face of danger he can pull through and survive. What he lacks in smarts he makes up for in gusto.

Being from Paris, Timothy can speak both French and English.

Weaknesses: While his powers are pretty strong, they do have limitations.

The first limitation is that he can’t use his Innocence on other Innocence-users. He can possess them and control their bodies (he does so to both Allen and Lenalee on separate occasions), but he can’t use their powers, and his powers don’t make theirs stronger.

Secondly, he can only possess up to Level 2 Akuma right now. As he trains he will be able to possess stronger ones, but he’s limited in what he can do at the moment. And given that the main characters are fighting Noahs and Level 4 Akuma, this puts him pretty far behind everyone else.

He is also limited by the number of Akuma involved in a fight. If there are only several Level 3s, then he won’t be able to do anything, as he’s not strong enough to possess any of them. Similarly, possessing normal people relies on their not knowing what he is doing, as he can only possess someone if he catches them off-guard (otherwise they can force him out of their mind). So, if his enemy is one human who is expecting him then he can’t fight them.

Finally, he can only control one body at a time. When he’s off fighting in an Akuma’s body, he has to leave his own behind. If he’s not careful (or if he doesn’t hide his body well beforehand), then he could end up dead pretty easily.

Also, while his powers have the potential to be amazingly strong, that’s all they are right now: a potential. He is still very untrained (at the point I’m taking him from, he’s only been able to fully use his Innocence for maybe a week or two at most), and he has a long way to go before he can become a great Exorcist.

Timothy’s impatience and childishness can be a hindrance, too. He has trouble sitting still long enough to form a plan, and he’s more likely to run off and do things instead of thinking a course of action through. And given that his powers rely on sneakiness and some level of planning, this tendency to not wait can be very dangerous.

Most importantly, Timothy is just a kid. No matter how strong his powers are, and no matter how sneaky he can be, he is still seen as a kid by adults, and as such he is treated differently. He may be fighting to save the world, but he still has homework and a bedtime and needs an adult to buy him things at the store. Adults around him also have this tendency to try to make decisions for him, because he’s only nine and he can’t take care of himself yet. This annoys Timothy to no end, but there’s nothing he can do about it until he grows up.

Defining Quote(s):
Timothy (In Link’s body, with Allen’s sword through his chest): Huh? What’s this?
Allen: It’s a sword. You’ve just been stabbed.
Timothy: WAAAAAAAGH! A SWORD- A SWORD- STABBED?! AAAAAGH!
Allen: [thinking to himself] Just kidding! My sword can’t harm humans, after all.
Timothy: Wahhh! Pw… PWAAAAAH!
Allen: L…Link?
Timothy: IT HURTS! IT HUUUURTS!
Allen: It doesn’t hurt! Really, it doesn’t! See, the sword doesn’t work on humans-
Timothy: It’s all your fault! You…MURDERER!!!
-Chapter 174, pages 15-16

“No! You can’t just decide stuff like that! You guys are just like my dad! Treating me just like a thing… “ - Timothy, chapter 175, page 16

In the 2 years since I’d come here, I’d become aware of the power that had awakened in me. I didn’t always agree with what I had to do, but my life here was more fun than I’d expected. So I kept my ability a secret, and I wasn’t gonna use it.

But when I saw the Director’s face then, I thought I could make use of my power. ‘Phantom Thief G’ is for saving the orphanage. It’s not that I’m doing anything bad. This is the only way we, the weak, can live happily. I’m using it for good.

[There is an image of all the people Timothy used for his deeds- who were subsequently locked up in prison- here.]

Oh…

It was doing…the same thing.

Those adults felt the same way I do.

I don’t have any right to say ‘save me.’ -Timothy, chapter 178, pages 12-15

Other: I’m going to play Timothy as having some of the same quirks as other Parasite-type Innocence users, namely that he has a voracious appetite. While canon doesn’t specifically say that he is a big eater, all Parasite-types have to eat lots of food (as a result of their Innocence being in their body), so I thought it reasonable to assume that Timothy would be the same.

Also, Timothy’s Innocence (Tsukikami) is unique in that it appears to have a mind of its own and it frequently talks with Timothy. I wasn’t sure if you wanted Tsukikami to be his own appable character or if I should just play him when it’s relevant (which it shouldn’t be that often if at all, since Timothy is the only person who can see and hear him), but I’m fine with it going either way. Personally I would prefer to just have him there and consider him as ‘there’, since he’s necessary for Timothy to use his powers and he can’t talk to anyone else anyway. I play Timothy in another game and Tsukikami has come up in conversation all of once in the year I’ve had him, so I’m used to having him be there but not really do anything ICly.

Timothy has a habit of making up names for people, mostly those who he doesn’t know the name of. But sometimes the nicknames stick, even after he’s learned their names.

Finally, since I mention it in the sample, Emilia is one of Timothy’s caretakers. She tutors him in the normal school subjects, while General Nine handles his Exorcist training.

Action Writing Sample: [When the Hitomi turns on, it’s zoomed in on a single brown eye. The eye blinks a couple of times, and then it pulls back, revealing Timothy’s face. He appears to be inspecting it, and the view gets jostled around a bit as he turns it around a few times before finally settling on looking at the screen.]

Man, what IS this thing? Did that crazy coffee guy make ‘em? It better not turn into some kinda giant robot if I press a button or somethin’.

[It isn’t exactly the best thing to do, given that he thinks this is one of Komui’s creations, but he tries pressing a few buttons. Mostly nothing happens to the video feed, but from what Timothy can see a GPS pops up.]

Woah, is this a map? I ain’t seen nothin’ like this before, that’s kinda cool! Hey, what’re these dots? Is that-

[Somehow he manages to turn off the video feed without realizing it, and it remains off for some time. But a few minutes later it turns back on, and now Timothy looks grumpy. Apparently someone managed to contact him and told him what was going on with the previous video post.]

You guys all saw that and nobody stopped me? You’re all jerks! You better forget all of that, or I’ll make you regret it!

[Yeah, he’s very embarrassed by it. Even though nothing terrible was recorded, he’s still embarrassed by showing himself when he was trying to figure how the Hitomi works. He thinks it made him look like a fool, and he doesn’t want anyone’s first impression of him to be that he’s a fool. It seems as though looking like a brat is a better option for him.]

Third Person Writing Sample: Timothy wanted chocolate chip cookies. That wasn’t too abnormal, really: he was a kid, and kids loved sweet things like that. But he was a kid who also happened to be dodging his homework, so he couldn’t just go ask his caretaker Emilia to make some for him. She would get on him about his work, and it would be hours until he got any cookies. It took quite a bit of patience to sit through boring math and history while delicious smells wafted in from the kitchen.

Needless to say, Timothy did not have the patience for that.

It couldn’t be that hard to make cookies, he decided. After all, the girls made them all the time. Emilia didn’t even look at a cookbook anymore, she could make them from memory. And since he had watched her make cookies several times before, Timothy figured that he could remember it well enough to make them himself. Then he would have cookies while still not doing any boring homework. Any adult would have seen the flaws in this plan, but to a nine-year-old it seemed like sheer brilliance.

First he had to turn the oven on. The oven had to get hot first, he understood that much. But what temperature was it supposed to be on? There were all these lines and numbers that made no sense whatsoever to him. It was an improvement over the wood-burning stove at the orphanage, but this newfangled ‘technology’ that the science department made always seemed so complicated. A few twists of one knob, which he could barely reach while standing on his tippy toes on a stepping stool, taught Timothy how to increase and decrease the temperature, and he turned it as high as it would go. The smell would tell him when the cookies were done, he figured.

Next came the mixing. Timothy hopped down from the stool and pushed it over to the counter, where he pulled out a big glass bowl and set it down on the counter. Then he got the flour, oil, butter, salt, and chocolate chips, but he had trouble picking which sugar to use. There was the white stuff that looked like salt, and then there was the brown sticky kind. Each kind was used in different cookies, but he couldn’t remember which one was the right one for chocolate chip cookies. He looked back and forth between the two bags before deciding that he could just do half of each kind, and he grabbed both bags and placed them on the counter.

“Is that everything,” Timothy murmured to himself as he looked through the cupboard again. He was sure he remembered everything important, but was there anything else? Maybe yeast? Emilia put that in cakes, but he couldn’t remember if it went into cookies or not. “Well, a little couldn’t hurt,” he said as he grabbed the container of yeast and took it to the counter. Then he decided that this was enough, somehow it would all make cookies. Missing a few things couldn’t hurt anything as long as he remembered the big stuff, right?

But then Timothy’s height proved to be problematic again: even with the stool he could just barely see over the counter, and he definitely couldn’t see into the bowl. So in another moment of brilliance he just climbed up onto the counter, and he sat on his knees while mixing everything into the bowl. He knew he wasn’t allowed to stand on the counter, but kneeling wasn’t really standing.

Then he realized he had forgotten the measuring cups, which were hanging on a rack on the other side of the kitchen. He looked over at them, wishing they were over here instead so that he wouldn’t have to get down. But hey, he could just guess at the amount, right? As long as he got it close, that’s what mattered. So he turned back to the bowl and started putting ingredients in. Half the bag of flour went into the bowl, followed by a pound of butter and way too much oil. The sugar he actually managed to get about right, until he remembered the brown sugar and added more of that to it. The entire bag of chocolate chips, save a handful Timothy shoved in his mouth to calm his sweet tooth, was added too. Three eggs went in shell and all, and then just a dab of yeast was added to top it off. Timothy actually forgot about the salt all together.

Mixing wasn’t too had, as there was a wire whisk on the counter that he easily used. But his arms got tired before the dough was well-mixed, and he gave up on it. It looked somewhat soupy, and there was a big chunk of unmixed flour at the bottom of the bowl, but Timothy couldn’t see that and he figured this would be alright.

Next the dough had to go on a pan. Timothy hopped down from the counter and pulled out a cookie sheet, and he set it on the floor to put the dough on. It was easier than putting it on the counter, and Timothy was getting impatient. He wanted cookies now, and it was taking too long. So he grabbed the bowl and tried to dump the mixture out on the cookie sheet, but the bowl was too heavy and he dropped it mid-shake. The bowl bounced off the ground with a loud clatter, and the dough lurched out and splattered everywhere. For a moment Timothy froze, and he looked over to the kitchen door. He hadn’t asked permission to be in the kitchen, of course, so he was worried that the commotion would draw unwanted attention.

A quarter-minute passed and nobody came by, so Timothy assumed he was safe. He looked back to the mess of dough on the ground, wondering just how he was going to get it all on the pan. He was craving cookies, and he didn’t want to waste any dough. Unfortunately the dough was difficult to clean up, thanks to its semi-liquid state, and he only managed to get most of it onto the cookie sheet. The rest either got smeared along the tile floor or ground deeply into the tiny Exorcist’s uniform. But he seemed not to care about the mess as he shoved his concoction into the oven. Tasty treats were only a few minutes away.

He expected delicious smells to come wafting out of the oven, but the only smell that invaded his nostrils was one of burnt and disgusting. As soon as he smelled it, Timothy opened the oven only to find that his dough had somehow melted down the sides of the pan and was now burning against the bottom of the oven. There was no fire yet, but that smoke looked dangerous. If something wasn’t done about this mess, it could turn out dangerous.

There was only one thing to do in this situation.

Timothy closed the oven calmly and walked away with that same air of innocence. He left the kitchen and, once safely out of range of the door (so nobody could connect him to the kitchen by his proximity to it), he ran as fast as his little legs could carry him. He ran all the way back to his room, which was on the other side of the headquarters, changed his uniform, and acted like nothing had happened.

And when Emilia asked about it later, after the fire had been put out and the kitchen staff had found a suspicious set of small footprints in the remains of the dough on the floor, Timothy insisted that he wasn’t involved. After all, they couldn’t prove he had anything to do with it. He wasn’t the only person with small feet in this building, so it could have been several other people. They had nothing on him.

Until they found his dough-encrusted uniform partially buried in the compost pile, at least.
