54. Boneland by Alan Garner

Yet another conclusion to a triology, some 40 years later. I was a big fan of The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and The Moon of Gomrath as a child - the former doesn't hold up so well as an adult (the pacing is too all over the place), but The Moon of Gomrath was still scary when I re read it some years ago.

This is for adults, but is very short. Colin from the original stories has grown up into a genius but non-functional adult. He works at the observatory at Jodrell Bank, looking for his lost sister in the Pleiades.

There's a parallel story with a mesolithic shaman type trying to find an heir, as the world will end if there is no one to carry on the rituals.

They really don't come together well at the end, and I'd figured out the "twist" very early on.

Having said that, it's a fairly convincing portrait of the after-effects of being an adult who's had to live with the results of his childhood adventures.
