Yes...it must all proceed this way...This is where it would all end...
This Zero Requiem...
"So...this is it, Lelouch?" asked Suzaku, eyes and body firm. But inside, he could not quench the squirming feeling in his heart...He didn't want to do this...he never wanted to do this...
"Yes...Suzaku, you shall kill me, as promised." Lelouch's voice never wavered, not even when talking about his own death.
A lump formed in Suzaku's throat. But he couldn't show it. Even now...even after they had already agreed...he just... "Do you absolutely want to do this?"
"All the hatred in the world is gathered on me, as planned." Lelouch only spoke of the plan. How could he...it was like he didn't even care that he was going to die! "Then all you have to do is erase my existence and put an end to the chain of hatred."
Suzaku was about to respond; he was going to ask Lelouch one more time if he was sure this was what he wanted...if this needed to be done...
And maybe it didn't matter if it was what Lelouch wanted. They had agreed, but now...did Lelouch care what he wanted?
Before Suzaku had a change to speak, Lelouch presented him with it.
Zero's mask.
And then all of his unspoken protests went silent. No, he knew it as well as Lelouch...it was necessary, wasn't it?
Suzaku cast his darkened eyes upon it as Lelouch continued, "The Black Knights will have the legend of Zero left behind for them. Schneizel will work for Zero. And now the world can be unified at one table. Not through military and force, but through negotiation and talk."
Yes...Lelouch knew this well...it was necessary. Necessary for the world to rebuild after Lelouch had destroyed the old one... "It can now embrace the future."
But...there would be no future left for him...for them...
Forcing all weakness down, knowing there would be no room for weakness after this, Suzaku reached for Zero's mask--untrembling fingers took in from Lelouch's hand.
Zero's mask...that symbol that Suzaku had so hated--and the face behind it that he had loathed--and loved--The man that caused chaos, had thrown down the old order, had murdered Euphie...the very thing that was the antithesis of himself--
He was forced to become.
And it would be that man--the symbol of hope; the symbol of despair--that would kill Emperor Lelouch.
Finally, Suzaku tore his eyes away from Zero's mask--his mask--to look back at Lelouch. His emperor, his enemy...and his friend. "So that's..."
For the first time in a long time, Lelouch smiled. "Yes...Zero Requiem."
There was silence for a few moments, as Suzaku suppressed any doubts that he had before. He would have to suppress them now. "We understood it in the World of C...that people desire the future..."
Don't you desire your future, Lelouch?
Lelouch, gave a small smirk at that. For a second, Suzaku wondered if Lelouch had guessed his thought. "Hey, Suzaku," he asked instead, "Don't you think people's wishes are the same as geass?"
Suzaku stared. What did he mean? Geass was--Geass was an evil, unstoppable force, wasn't it?
"Things you can't accomplish with your own powers, you ask for the assistance of others."
Lelouch...he really did wish... "Wishes, huh?" was all Suzaku could say.
"Yes," Lelouch continued. "I shall gamble on the Geass known as people's wishes for the sake of the world's future."
And in the process lose your own future...our future...
"Lelouch..."
But he stopped him. "Only that are prepared to fire should be fired at."
He had been numb--so numb before, about talking about this...Back when Zero Requiem had been formed, they both talked about it without a second thought. But now...so close to when the time would come for all of this to end... "Lelouch..."
He wanted to say so many things. But what could be said? This was the path both of them had decided. And it was also the path they both must take. For the sake of the world--it had to be done.
But--
"Having second thoughts, Suzaku?" Lelouch asked, a small smirk on his face. Lelouch was always very good at reading him.
Suzaku looked away, quickly. "No..."
Stepping closer to him, Lelouch continued, "Suzaku, we lied to each other for so long. Don't lie to me now."
Turning his head and looking back at Lelouch--just their eye contact saying it all--"A long time ago...I wanted to kill you so badly for everything that you had done. Even after that, when we talked of it, I thought it would be so easy, and yet..."
Though Lelouch continued to smirk, his eyes softened, "You were never a man for killing, Kururugi Suzaku."
"It doesn't matter," Suzaku turned away. "If that is my duty--my duty directed to me by my Emperor in order to save this world, then I will do it. As you wish, Lelouch--I will kill you."
There. He said it. And that was that. The deed would be done. He could not break his promises now. Not to Lelouch.
Though Suzaku had intended to leave, and prepare, he was stopped by a sudden touch on his cheek. Lelouch was standing closer, his hand gently caressing Suzaku's face, with a sad smile. "You know, Suzaku...there are many things I won't regret leaving behind in this world...but I will miss you."
Suzaku's hand reached up to cover Lelouch's. His friend's hands were warm now...soon they would be cold forever.
"Lelouch..."
Lelouch's violet eyes looked back at Suzaku's emerald ones, hope lightened in them. "Will you think of me often, Suzaku?"
Small tears now grew in the corner of Suzaku's eyes. But he pushed them away. He had to. "Every day...Lelouch...Every day..."
"Good...I don't care what the rest of the world thinks of me 'Lelouch the Demon' or 'Lelouch the Tyrant' but none of that matters...as long as only you know the truth."
Oh God...how could he kill him now? He had just made the one promise he regretted--the promise that would end Lelouch's life and in a way, his own...and yet..."Lelouch...I--"
Lelouch suddenly placed a finger upon Suzaku's lips, silencing him. "Not now, Suzaku...later...Yes, it must be later...it must be then."
"Then?"
"Yes," Lelouch nodded. "At the end of all things...it must be at the very last moment. In my very last moment...then I wish to hear it."
Gulping, Suzaku spoke, "All right. Then."
"Hmph." Lelouch removed his hand. "Very well. Now that is all before--"
But Suzaku wasn't going to let that happen. Lelouch had turned away, but Suzaku grabbed his hand, pulling him back into his arms.
And before Lelouch had a chance to protest, Suzaku placed a kiss upon his emperor's lips.
It was only a second before Lelouch surrendered, holding Suzaku tightly as he kissed him back--long finger's running through his friend's hair, prolonging their last kiss--wishing it lasted for eternity. Oh, if only...
But all things must end. And they had no choice but to break apart.
And when they did, their faces returned to the masks they must hold--stoic, unfeeling, uncaring. That was what they must be from now on until the end--for the sake of the world, it must be done.
But Lelouch switched once more, his face turning to a smile. "Sayonara, Suzaku," he switched at once to Japanese--the language of their youth...one last memento to the happy times they used to have...and all the times they would be robbed of now.
Suzaku forced a smile, "Sayonara, Lelouch."
Turning away, Lelouch gave a small, carefree wave. "Until then."
Suzaku waved back, but his fake smile soon faded forever. "Until then..."
Lelouch's body felt so heavy, slumped against him. Suzaku's hands on the sword were clenched--tense. There were screams, shouts...but Suzaku could not hear them. He could feel nothing...Only the desperate pangs of his heart as he fulfilled Zero Requiem.
Lelouch's bloody fingers slid down his Zero mask, marking him forever. "You will sacrifice all of your own happiness for the world...eternally..." finished Lelouch.
The tears could not be stopped. "I accept this Geass..."
And then, just as he was about to pull the sword, and end his friend's life, forever, Suzaku closed his eyes as he whispered. "Lelouch...I love you."
"I know..." Was all Lelouch replied in the final moment.
And then Suzaku removed the sword.
;_; I guess I don't get emotional unless I'm writing it. I didn't cry the first 5x I watched this scene. And then I watch it to write it from Suzaku's POV. BAWLING LIKE A BABY.
And yes, I wrote this under the impression that Lelouch = dead. I've accepted that he's dead. BUT, I really do hope that with the implications Sunrise gives us, Lelouch is alive. I want him to be, so badly, buuuut...I won't rage if he actually is dead. I'll just go with the flow, I guess.
