i went to the
Chuck Close opening tonight at the SFMOMA, very impressive as usual. in particular, his recent large format polaroids are just outstanding. there is a very ethereal quality to them don't quite exist in his other work.
also, even more impressive, was a piece by
Doris Salcedo, also seen
here. if you can do the flash/quicktime enlarged version, it's worth it. an entire huge room was filled with these beautiful and delicate, asymmetric, shoebox size, holes in the wall with shoes inside, and transparent animal fiber sewn over it. as a witness to the nameless deaths and violence in Columbia, the artist represents a notion of presence after death and the persistant memory of those absent. it was really quite powerful and inspiring.
