It occurs to me, as I jump between scenes
trying to put together my Prufrock vid, how very similar the scene at the end of "The Runaway Bride" and the last scene of "The Waters of Mars" are, both in imagery, characterization, and theme.
In both, the Doctor stands before the TARDIS in the street as snow drifts down, just having delivered the oneshot!Companion home. But while he thinks all is well, he has saved the day, the world, her life- she has other ideas. She sees through the triumph to his own problems below.
Doctor: "I don't need anyone."
Donna: "Yes, you do. 'Cause sometimes... I think you need someone to stop you."
But then later, in WoM...
Adelaide: "Is there anything you can't do?"
Doctor: "Not anymore."
Donna tells him he has gone too far, but makes him promise he'll find someone. Adelaide tells him he's gone too far, in the only way she knows will shake him. If he has crossed the line to keep her from death, maybe he will not see himself as powerful enough to live beyond the borders when he sees even that did not save her from death.
Sorry, words are not making sense probably. New medication woes.
