Regarding Torchwood Children of Earth, up to episode four.

WHY IANTO. WHY WHY WHY. I MEAN. HE WAS MY FAVORITE AND HAD SUCH PRETTY EYES.

Its not even fair. Pretty much the whole Torchwood team has been eliminated.

Okay, on a more analytical level, this has actually been a really nicely plotted and well-characterised arc and I'm enjoying it. John Barrowman's bitching aside, I think it's possible Torchwood benefits from changing from a thirteen episode format to five episodes. It doesn't lose any of the typical Torchwood features, either- strange rampant use of guns, Jack dies at least twice an episode, boykissing, Welsh jokes, racial/imperialistic discomfort, naked!Jack....

Also, strangely, my parents have been watching the show too, and have yet to say a word about Jack and Ianto. Not that they're very homophobic, but they typically view anything outside of the married-and-heterosexual norm to be a blatant vulgar ploy for higher ratings based on shock value. I typically view such things as One Person has a relationship with Other Person and it is about as significant and unique as any other person or relationship ever.

But then I guess that's cause I feel outside that hierarchy of "more than friends" vs. "Just friends"  or married vs. unmarried or heteronormativity vs. other sexualities. People are all different and unique, and all their relationships are just as different and unique, and I think, maybe, that it would be nice if we could agree that we are all equal, and that one classification isn't better or even more "normal" than another.

One thing I DID find very interesting was the explicit horror shown about offering the children of Failed Asylum Seekers to the 456. These would probably be the non-white, non-British people looking for equality. RTD very clearly has a lot of mindsets of British imperialism written into his world-building -just think of how many times we have to hear about the Great and Bountiful Human Empire on Doctor Who, after all- and all the extremely color-blind casting that sometimes leads to minorities being put in questionable positions (ESPECIALLY when it comes to bi-racial relationships, ye gods.) So is the writing of this as a terrible solution to giving up the kids a conscious thing, to acknowledge the difficulties of racial representation, or unconscious irony?

captain jack fucks holes in walls, languages: welsh, tv: torchwood, tv: doctor who, asexuality: not just for amoebas anymore
