I wasn't paying much attention and didn't think it was actually gonna happen. Damned glad it did!
I would have marked the same choice on the survey ten years ago too--neutral. My mixed feelings a lot to do with my devout Catholicism at the time. Turns out I had a lot of preconceptions about gay people--when I met my friend Eric at NYU orientation the next year, I never even considered he was gay. When he later mentioned this to me, it took about five minutes to shift my entrenched conceptualizations. I'm so grateful I had that opportunity to change my mind!
It sounds like we traveled the same trajectory: my ambivalence was related to my religious beliefs at the time, and I changed my mind by becoming friends with gay people/realizing that some of my friends were gay.

But it's sad that a liberal state legalizing same-sex marriage is supposed to be a milestone.
