today I put on a baggy fleece jacket and went to the Met by myself. i made a pencil sketch of the statue of Athena and took notes on the backstory behind the mythological images on Greek water jugs. i read the New York Times on the train -- even part of the business section. there are men buying the lots of ocean that will be left behind when the already melting glaciers of the north pole fully disappear. nevermind the environmental implications - we're go for an Antarctic harbor and oceanic oil drills. some clever entrepreneurs want to make an Ipod that functions as a newspaper because no one reads the newspaper anymore (can't do it while you drive, watch TV, talk on the phone or navigate the internet -- so when CAN you do it?). the level of materialism is just...profound.

i'm thinking of using my Pell grant to take a cruise to Iceland. they have special tours to see the glaciers, waterfalls and Northern Lights. and daily Scandinavian breakfast buffets. i want to be near nature- not the silly conserved squares of grass in this city, but the untouched kind of nature. and be somewhere silent and still.
