Akihiko grumbles a little as he moves over to his bed. It's true that the painkillers he's taking end up making him feel pretty groggy, but sleeping so much makes him feel sluggish, slow. It grates on him. He climbs into bed still fully-clothed; enduring the ordeal of changing clothes just to sleep in something different seems pointless right now. After several long moments of trying to actually get comfortable, he finally, finally falls asleep.
He can't remember ever feeling so scared before.
There's another bright flash of light, and just a second after a huge roar that shakes the windows and the floor that Akihiko is pressed against. As much as he would like to press his face into the floor, he has an important job to do: he has to listen for footsteps in the thunder. But he can't make any out.
There's a light tug on his sleeve. "Big bro, are they coming?" He turns to the small girl at his side. Her pigtails are red instead of gray, but somehow that doesn't seem to matter. "Not right now, Mitsuru," he answers, the name seeming to twist on his tongue. He doesn't think it's the name he meant to say, but she gives him a bright smile of relief and names aren't nearly as important as monsters anyway.
Especially because now there are footsteps! And they're stopping right next to them! But when the blankets get whipped aside, it's Shinji's face peering at them. "Whatcha doing down there?" he asks, and Mitsuru pips back, "Hiding from the lightning monsters!"
Shinji grimaces. "Those kids are telling stories again? Look, there's no such thing as mons-" The room is suddenly all lit up, clearly revealing Shinji's suddenly tight face. "...Scoot over, will ya?" he says, crawling under the bed with them as they move to give him space. It makes it hard for Akihiko to listen for footsteps in the thunder, but that's okay by him.
Because though he's a little squished now, he's between his sister and his best friend, and suddenly he feels a little safer than before. A giggle even manages to escape him. "Hey, if monsters come now, we could get them!
Akihiko can feel their nods on either side as they chorus back. "Right!"
Akihiko slowly swims up from sleep, slight pressure on his side growing into pain. He reaches out for the water and painkillers near his bed, odd dreams or not, but his hand meets only air and he flails for a moment, trying to regain his balance and not fall off the bed. The motion sparks his side into more pain and the small cry he gives is higher pitched than usual.
