019 - stacking the deck and rukia's culinary skills

Jun 17, 2006 21:27

Statistics and probability often overlooked, and yet universally applied. Blackjack is the weak point of all forms of casino card-gambling. While the deck is still stacked towards the house, a proper arrangement can change the odds by 2-4% in our favour. This is an interesting statistic, which requires a little more analysis.

There apparently is a need to practice playing blackjack, and a group of graduate students and mathematics majors have gathered together four times a week to polish our skills. Perhaps we shall attempt to play against the house and make some money. We do not have much for stakes, but it will be an interesting mental exercise, nevertheless.

Thus, the goal this summer: to work out the statistics of the matter at hand and bring our card playing skills up to snuff. Perhaps a first trial run before the fall term starts at a nearby casino. Is there one nearby? Plus motivation to raise some money as our stakes.

Rukia has apparently decided that her culinary skills should be worked on this summer. I shall endeavour to prevent an event of a pyrotechnic manner to occur. At least, I shall be doing my best. Today, it is something that does not require anything overly complicated, which is a relief.

The cameraderie present in gambling partners is intriguing, though perhaps it is the idea that we shall be doing this in order to "beat the house" and "make a boat-load of cash." Perhaps they fail to understand that it is solely a mathematical exercise in statistical analysis and probability adapting to change in the entertainment industry. Such calculations must be precise, and we are required to play in a group so as not to appear as if we are counting cards.

I find this exceedingly interesting, as counting cards is apparently illegal even if one is doing it mentally and unaided by technological gadgets. However, this is a simple matter in strategy and tactics. A proper general would certainly have a strategic placement of troops.

Although this is not my project, I am still aiding in the current assessment and probability analysis in card play. As such, am looked up to as one of Those In-Charge. The training will have to be rigourous to weed out those unsuited to the task. Anybody can come in to play, but only those who have the intention and the mind for calculated thought can take part. This is important.

With everything that is going on, I am still awaiting the attorneys' verdicts of court dates adn other things of interest. It looks to be set for the fall sometime, or perhaps early winter. This shall be a pain, I can see. They have not yet given me a definitive announcement, therefore there is no need to apprise Rukia of the goings on unless the situation changes.

I have found a sparring partner, a regular one. This shall help bring me up to snuff, as I see that I am still lacking in stamina and proper skill. The bruises obtained from that disgusting drunkard were exacerbated from our first sparring session. I see that I shall have to become used to acquiring bruises and other such nonsense on a regular basis.
