Well, the world is a depressing place lately, isn't it?
[She's way too chipper for that statement: the good doctor is at Sergei's, and there's an empty brandy glass on the table as she debates round two.]
I just keep thinking... there must be something we can do for each other?
Me, anyway. I feel so useless here. You all have these... skills. I don't

Hello, Daxter.
[She's definitely going to have that second drink now.]
Um, thank you. But I don't deal with idleness well.

Yeahhhh, I hear ya. Home was dangerous but at least there was shit to do.
So what's a "biotechnologist" do, huh?
Reply
Mm. Yes.
Hm? Well, in my case, in vivo genetic engineering using specialized viral vectors, though I still do some biofield-materia junctioning in my spare time. Though there's a wide range of us, with a variety of specialties and projects.

[She's thinking it over.]
I take viruses, pull them to pieces, splice them back together with new proteins, and inject them into... subjects. That's mainly what I'm working--was working on back home.
Probably the most interesting project I've had.
[Because she's not sure if she's allowed to count Vincent yet...]

No, no, no! No, I don't make people sick!
Mostly... mostly rodents right now--I mean, I don't make anyone sick... It's not... it's not that kind of virus.
Not like a cold or anything.
It actually... it enhances a subject's ability to connect to the planet--or, it's supposed to. It confers supernatural strength and agility to an individual, not to mention heightened senses and, ah, interesting alterations to the immune system.
It's... it's nothing horrible. I'm not a monster or anything.
[Unless what the caped man from her future said is true. Then... well, she lied.]

[Ooohhh boy, some nasty juju vibes over here.]

[She suddenly feels bizarrely guilty about that...]
Not... exclusively? I'd... rather not. I think we could accomplish the same thing with cell cultures at this point? You know?
But... I don't... it's not really my project: I'm a second.
[Plausible deniability? She'll try it?]

They don't talk or anything, do they?
[Because Dax isn't a rat. He is not. ...but if these rats she experiment on talk then that's just fffff.]

Talk?
[This would be nervous, slightly relieved laughter: she's not on trial, maybe?]
No, of course they don't talk! There's no such thing as--wait... do rats here talk?
[Oh, she could never experiment on a talking rat! Just a talking human... and a god... and an alien... and maybe...]

Naw, rats don't talk. But y'know, if they did. I'm just sayin', that would...y'know, that'd suck, if they did.
But they don't.
Reply
Yes. That would... yes, it would be... awkward.

Yeah, ain't much a market here for the sorta shit you do. Not a lot of...lab-y stuff and all.

That's why I've been so absorbed in, well, absorbing information. But I need some outlet, so place for all that knowledge to go.
