Silvester (New Year's Eve) in Munich
For 3 the days prior to NYE it becomes legal to sell and buy fireworks in Germany. On NYE itself it becomes legal to let them off, and thousands of Münchners congregate in public places to fire rockets out of bottles, even though the inter-Münchner is at times only about a metre.
After arming myself with 6 € worth of alcohol (3L beer and a bottle of wine) and 30 euro worth of fireworks (20 exploding rockets and numerous smaller things), Anthea and I met up with a group of my uni friends and (after some fondue) we made our way to Olympia-Zentrum to stand in the cold on some frost coated hills and see in the New Year.
I actually discovered (too late) that it was far more fun to fire the exploding rockets horizontally across the surface of the frozen lake that was in the park, rather than up into the air. Next time...
