im skeptical of movements because im skeptical of mass
conversion. conversion, if it is to be true, must be
difficult. otherwise it is not conversion. mass conversion
is almost an oxymoron. when the masses convert, one does
not have to convert, one simply floats along with the
masses. the consequence of this is that one's conversion,
once tested, is found to be weak. and often, one realizes,
one never converted in the first place.
right now, social justice and community are hot topics
amongst evangelical christians. one could even call this
interest a movement. as much as my heart longs for the
conversion of the Church, i am deeply skeptical that much
long-term fruit will be born of this movement.
i am not so much interested in movements. i am interested
in conversion. and in the midst of movements, genuine
conversion is hard to come by.
so i will wait until the tide recedes and then go and see
what stones remain. i will pick them up and put them in
my pocket and continue walking along the way.
