going amish, going exstinct?

Jun 11, 2007 14:43

my soul is tired. this book is incredibly draining.
i wish i didnt have to use the computer so much for
the project.

...

what should the church's response be to global industrial
capitalism? how far should we go?

a friend recently wrote something like, "in the face of
global industrial capitalism, the kingdom of God looks
more like the amish than a fair-trade trade cup of coffee."

that's what im thinking too. but can we do it? are we
willing to sacrifice that much? how far can we go before
we alienate the church we are trying to convert? what would
33-year old upper-middle class parents of 3 think if they
heard us preaching a move to forgotten rural towns, living
off the grid, sowing seeds, baking bread, canning jam,
and milking cows?

can we really convince the church to go country? and how
do we go amish without alienating ourselves from the poor?
how do we go off-the-grid without totally withdrawing from
society? do we really want to go bruderhof style? the salt
of the themselves instead of the world?

are we willing to abandon "technological progress"? are
we willing to give up our cell phones and laptops and digital
cameras and ipods? are we willing to live in real time
instead of virtual time? will that move permanently seal us
off in little time-vacuum like the amish? we will we become
antiqued items in a museum? isnt going to the desert essanic
rather than messianic?

oh...so much to think about. so much to think about.

...

when im done with this book, ill be done with computers.
