Why is it, that due to being full-time students, we are (or at least a lot of us) are almost completely broke?
We are the ones making the strides to better our lives.
I know this involves us sacrificing making more money now, but this should also be the exact reason we should get paid more at our jobs.
Most students in their early twenties are full-time.
What does this mean?
You are barred (for the most part) from having a job in an office or a prestigious company that treats their employees well, and also pays well.
What does this leave?
This leaves part-time or crappy paying full-time (and thus stressful since you are also a full-time student) at a place like Macy's, or Hollywood Video, or being a security guard, etc.
Places like these only pay between $5.50 and $8.00 an hour.
That is far from the necessary amount needed to pay bills, eat, etc.
When I worked at Hollywood Video, I made $5.50 an hour.
So, if I worked a 40 hour week (which was rarely allowed, given my full-time status at school)...I would get paid $220.00 a week before taxes and $201.85 after.
So, let's just say I probably worked 10-30 hours weekly.
Yeah, pay sucked.
And I worked with people who lived on their own.
Sucked for them more.
Working at Macy's I get paid $7.50 an hour.
Go ahead and laugh.
I accept the blame for getting a late start in the job circuit.
I started working at Hollywood in August 2006, when I was 19.
If I were smarter, and had my grandparents been more encouraging about me being responsible, I would be making a lot more.
On top of that $7.50 (or it could be $7.15, I checked a few months ago, but I forget now), I also get 1% commission.
So, for each $100 item I sell, I get $1 of that for myself.
Most of us sell between $0 and $2,000 depending on whether or not it's a sale day.
Oh, yeah, and taxes are taken out of that too, so it's probably more like .0825% commission.
So, let's just say it doesn't add that much more to my take home pay.
What I am saying is, students are working for a better life.
This should add respect and esteem to work, thus adding more opportunity for growth in pay.
I should be making at least $10.00 an hour with 3% commission at LEAST, rather than $7.50/7.15 with 1% commission with 8.25% taken out for taxes, etc.
I am just really tired of being broke a lot.
There should be some kind of allowance for not being able to work a great full-time job for students who are full-time.
The economy is horrible.
