{ scene } i wonder how you'd be if someone were to call you on it

The strange adjustment coming off assignment is one constant in James's life- there are more of those than you'd think, although it'd be a challenge to get him to name many of them. Ordinarily he spends it loafing around his London haunts or pretending the flat doesn't feel like a cage, but when he signs himself (somewhat painfully) out of the hospital against medical advice he takes a taxi to a quiet park and wanders until he's sure no one will see him vanish, quietly, when he steps very carefully into a copse of trees and disappears. The island in the nexus is undisturbed from the last time he left it; the boat is still docked, the castle is quiet and dark, and the security system partly keyed to his own pinpoint shows nothing out of the ordinary.

After it had been ascertained that he was unconscious because he had a concussion and not because the blunt force trauma had done something he was going to die of, and after he'd been informed of as much, James had been remarkably disinterested in sitting around under medical supervision while he healed from something he's been through before. He's in the same mood by the time he gets the key to turn in the lock, but not completely disinterested in company, which is probably why he thinks about looking up Pela long enough to end up sitting by the water and not calling her.

Baby steps.
