Retina
ret·i·na n. pl. ret·i·nas or ret·i·nae The delicate multilayered light-sensitive membrane lining the inner posterior chamber of the eyeball containing the rods and cones and connected by the optic nerve to the brain.
Duncan wonders why light keeps passing underneath closed eye lids. Well it’s not really light, it’s those strange florescent shapes that stupid kids used to press into closed eyes before they knew it was bad for them. Health teachers told them it would make them go blind, but for Duncan it never stops, though he no longer presses his palms to his eyes and pushes in. Instead it comes to him unasked for, spinning him like a merry-go-round. His sister Lilly is on there waiting for him. “Come on asshole!” She teases. Her bright blue eyes are so much likes the one he loves, and his own.
All he wants now is to go blind. He wants to stab his own eyes out like king Oedipus. He wants to laugh out his insides, till all the blood comes out of him.
Dimly, Duncan is aware of his cracked and bleeding lips, and a word that is being drug out of him, over and over. What does it mean? The shapes are beginning to sear his retinas. Bloody lilies all in a row.
So much blood, it rains from the sky. It foams in the sea. It covers his hands, and he sees himself pulling white panties down her thighs, he sees their hips align. Blood is always being spilled, one way or another.
“Veronica Veronica Veronica.” He tries to struggle but something is holding him down. He moves and the restraints dig into him, pinching his skin. The blood fills his eyes and he screams until he can’t hear himself anymore.

Outside of his room, Celeste and Jake gaze in on their son safely from the window looking in on his cell. Celeste looks to the doctor for reassurance. Her son is asleep but still his lips move with that girl’s name.
“You’re sure this won’t hurt him?”
“Mrs. Kane, electroconvulsive therapy is all that I can recommend with your son so far gone in this state of psychosis. However you wish to proceed is up to you, but there is a very small, very slight, chance of complications.”
“We just want our son to get better.” Jake says, pain and unsaid things in the back of his throat.
“And he will, Mr. Kane.” The doctor reaches for his clipboard and schedules the session for 9 A.M.
