Summery: Ursa wonders how she could have raised such a monster. Azula overhears.
“What is wrong with that child?”
Azula hears this as she runs out the door and flattens herself against the wall to listen. Her mother thinks there is something wrong with her? But what? She’s a Firebending prodigy: she’s strong, she’s intelligent, she’s beautiful. She’s perfect. As these thoughts run around her head, Azula peeks through the doorway. Her mother picks up the charred doll Uncle Iroh sent her and stares at it mournfully.
“How did I raise such a monster?”
Tears sting Azula’s eyes, and she scowls, turning away. Her mother is a fool. Still the words replay themselves in her head, over and over and over again:
How did I raise such a monster?
It isn’t until nearly seven years later, laying on a hard cot in a mental hospital that she discovers the answer:
“You didn’t raise me at all.”
And the words stop playing.
