Gojyo is best described as a playboy with a heart of gold. His favorite things in life are cigarettes, booze, and sex. While on his own, he used booze & games of chance with strangers to get through the day and sex with strangers to get through the night. All the while, he felt like his hanyou* status (half human, half youkai**) would not allow him to enjoy life because neither human nor youkai wanted him. By remaining with the humans, Gojyo stood a chance at hiding the nature of his birth; most youkai seem to know that red hair & red eyes means a "taboo child", while fewer humans do. Gojyo was alone from age 12-15, so how he survived during that time is a mystery; my headcanon says he must've lost his virginity in that time, one way or the other. After meeting Banri, they became something like petty thieves, but Banri also taught him how to be an excellent gambler - playing cards and mah-jongg - and shared his cigarette brand (Hi-Lites) though Gojyo had been smoking since at least age 12. Presumably (via headcanon) Banri also taught Gojyo how to be a lady's man, and Gojyo took those teachings and became more of a charmer than an easy lay. Banri knew that things weren't easy for hanyou, and never tried to pretend otherwise. It was Gojyo's time alone and with Banri that refined the rough, punkish, streetwise-survivalist aspects of Gojyo's personality. One last bit of my head-canon: Gojyo & Banri lived and operated in a thriving metropolis that definitely had bars, but my headcanon is that Gojyo is thus also familiar with clubs, that style of dancing for men, back-room clandestine meetings, and that whole culture.
*Hanyou or Taboo children are half-youkai and so-called because it is a social taboo for the two races to fornicate. They are marked physically by blood-red hair and eyes; apparently possess no elemental powers; and yet they do have some measure of extraordinary strength, speed, and possibly a bit of life expectancy. They are not a race, and are the equivalent of a mule in the classic biology example of a horse and a donkey mating - thus, they are all infertile. (Note: Gojyo does not know he is infertile.)
**Youkai are a mortal race that live longer than humans and tend to have elemental powers. They are marked physically by a small tattoo somewhere on their body, elongated ears, and fangs. Hanyou possess none of those traits. In Gojyo's case, the element is water because he is a kappa, or water demon.
After meeting Hakkai, Sanzo, and Goku, Gojyo was confronted with the idea that "there are other things in the world that are red." Basically, that he can enjoy life in spite of his "taboo" birth. He became a best friend to Hakkai, a raucous brother-figure to Goku, and a pain in Sanzo's side, regularly stopping the journey to do "good deeds" that Sanzo would have otherwise looked over. The last major incident before Gojyo is pulled from is exactly that. Two brothers were deceived by a man calling himself "Kami-sama" (God) and Gojyo actually left his companions (who at first continued on their journey without him) to try to help the brothers, nearly dying in the process. Hakkai also said to Gojyo about a year after they met, "you make a terrible villain," implying Gojyo really can't be a bad guy even when he tries to act like it. Gojyo has tried to save one of his most hated enemies (Kami-sama) and got seriously beat up on Banri's behalf when he knew Banri wouldn't return to repay the favor. He doesn't like running away from fights or backing down from a challenge, but if it means helping his friends (or innocents) then he'll do whatever it takes full-throttle. He doesn't need approval from someone else that his actions are good or moral or even smart - it's what he wants to do.
By the point at which I have pulled him from, Gojyo and his three traveling companions (Sanzo, Goku, and Hakkai) are only just beginning to work well as a group and really becoming friends more than acquaintances. The turning point came during a game of majongg, which is important because it's a game they often played while traveling all that distance and the full version requires four players. Gojyo was already bonded in friendship to Hakkai, tolerated Goku even at his most annoying moments, but had never gotten along well with Sanzo. In fact, Gojyo is the only one of the four who asked to be taken along, rather than compelled or ordered to go. It wasn't until after that mahjongg game that even Gojyo couldn't deny the friendship formed between all four of them, even as they bickered and argued with each other. Up until that point, they'd more or less acted on their own in battle, but in the second round against Kami-sama they incorporated each other's fighting styles and followed-up on each other's attacks to finally defeat him.
Gojyo has some increased strength, a great deal more endurance, and some improved speed and dexterity, allowing him to jump and swing his bladed staff. Despite all that, his fighting style remains crude - mainly tavern-brawling, including punches and kicks - and his only "magical" ability is his power to summon & control his weapon. Some extraordinary talents - ability to hold his breath for long periods of time, impressive charisma, as well as the strength/endurance/speed/dexterity - are often blamed on his heritage as a half-water-youkai, only vaguely remeniscient of the kappa of Japanese myth that he is often called as a nickname.
Compared to the other three, Gojyo is arguably the weakest in terms of raw power, yet he makes up for it in personality. He cracks jokes, he teases mercilessly, he is tenacious to a fault, and quite the charmer canonically to ladies. He often uses the word "bijin" (beautiful person) instead of "bijou" (beautiful lady), leading one to wonder (again my headcanon) if he had ever - in his earlier years on the street - been intimate with a man. Often this is blamed on Banri, but they were as much room-mates then as Hakkai was Gojyo's room-mate for the three years before the Sanzo Party set out for India. (Meaning no canon evidence of sexual relations with either Banri or Hakkai and nothing from my headcanon either.)
While his companions accuse Gojyo of being "lecherous," what gets him in trouble is nearly always harmless flirting. In fact, the girls he hits on will often indulge his advances and it is only then that Gojyo gets reprimanded -- being smacked with a paper fan by Sanzo and teased verbally by Goku. In essence, while he enjoys sex, he can restrain himself, and is actually more interested in love, which he has never experienced and has said before that he'd "like to experience it at least once." This also goes back to his history: he's the only child of a married man and his mistress, who both decided to commit suicide & tried to take Gojyo with them. Afterwards, he ended up in the care of his father's legal wife and her son Jien (Gojyo's half-brother and a full youkai), but his "mother" was so distraught by what happened that she often abused Gojyo physically & mentally. To stop her, Jien engaged in intercourse with his own mother. She still cried all the time, and that was why Gojyo (approx. age 12***) was wiling to die if it stopped his mother's tears. As a result, Gojyo doesn't think he's ever experienced love in his whole life.
***At first, canonically this occurred when he was 8. Later in canon it was retconned to age 12.
That's why "there are other things in the world that are red" is so important. Aside from the slight trauma that affects Gojyo every time he sees a haunting visage of his mother, for the most part he's gotten over himself and his hanyou issues - at least, a lot more than his three traveling companions have. He's the only one unaffected by the rain, for instance. He regularly keeps Hakkai's depressing moods in check, reassures Goku when he doesn't understand something (because chances are good Gojyo doesn't either), and is many times the only one bull-headed enough to stand up to Sanzo and his emotional constipation. Even while the four of them are stuck in a cramped vehicle on an incredibly long journey, Gojyo's main desire is really just to have a good time - laughing with his buds, smoking & boozing it up, chasing a little tail here & there, make a little money gambling to buy nicer stuff... So long as he's with those three, it's fine. That goes back to the desires of his past life's self: Kenren promised Goku they'd be together forever, but Goku's three heavenly friends died & were reborn as mortals. Subconsciously, Gojyo is carrying out Kenren's wish, since Gojyo is his reincarnation.
Gojyo has been struggling his whole life just to stay alive, and that's made him equally stubborn and strong-willed. Nowadays, his past generally manifests in being lenient and sympathetic towards children. More street-wise than smart, more endearing than carnal, Sha Gojyo can come off as a snarky bastard at first, but he's a charming punk underneath it all.
[orientation] Definitely leans heavily on the side of heterosexual; I usually play him around Kinsey 1-2, depending on how events play out in a game.

[wish] In canon, just before the Kami-sama arc began, Hakkai & Gojyo spotted a shooting star. Hakkai suggested he should pray for his family's health and happiness, but Gojyo retorted that he sounded like an old man & wishing was too cliche. Hakkai then admitted he envied people like Goku who could easily think of something to wish for - they guessed Goku would wish for food or something. Hakkai: "I couldn't think of a thing." Gojyo replied: "Well yeah, that's because you don't have anything you need to wish for."
That will be my wish for Gojyo: that when he sees another shooting star, he has nothing to wish for. This is broad on purpose, but it should encompass a few things:
- My earlier note about being loved at least once, with the caveat of that person knowing the details of Gojyo's race & family history and still getting Gojyo to believe they love him
- However it is he's making a living, the pluses should far outweigh the minuses
- Whether he has room-mates or living alone, he should enjoy his lifestyle
- He should have friends new & old that he enjoys hanging out with
- If he can't find his brand of cigarettes, he should have a good substitute
- He should know of at least one favorite watering hole to drink, smoke, & gamble/game at
[requested house] Somewhere in Aster, preferably Nogiku, secondarily Bara; I checked out all of the houses and somewhere in Aster would suit Gojyo best, I think, being middle-lower class for one. Alternatively, since Hibiscus is "market" & "average," either Hachisu or Komainu would be another good option. I really don't think he'd fit well in anything higher class than Hibiscus.
[misc notes]
Gojyo wields a staff-like weapon with a crescent blade at the top and a chained spade at the bottom, which he can summon with a mere thought and send away again just as easily. In the series, it is called a 'shakujou,' but is closer to the "cresecent-moon-toothed spade" (yueyachan) that Chinese Buddhist priests used as both a traveling staff (with clanging rings) and a shovel to dig graves. The story of how he acquired his weapon is this: Gojyo and Goku knocked over two urns where sacred weapons were being contained, and when the urns cracked open, the weapons claimed new owners. The "staff" claimed Gojyo and the only way to separate them would have been for Gojyo to die - an option, it's worth noting, Sanzo was openly in favor of. Gojyo can essentially control the weapon's chain telekinetically, being the "owner."

Now undressed, Gojyo lay down next to her on his left side, acting like he was going to kiss her and allowing exaggerated pleasure to show on his face. Just before their lips touched, he pulled back with a smirk. He used his right hand to massage her breasts, then trailed it lightly over her body - gently encouraging her to lay on her back - while he kissed her neck and hummed a little for effect. Girls seemed to like that sort of thing: physical assurances that you were enjoying it as much as you hoped they were. He teased her clit a little while leaning back to smile sweetly at her - still teasing with the promise of a kiss they hadn't yet shared. After all, this was just the appetizer.
