I was reminded last night, now that Lost Highway is finally (finally, FINALLY!!!) out on DVD, yet again of just how brilliant Lynch's work is. He is one of the only filmmakers who seems to successfully explore the medium as a pure art rather than a narrative form. There are others: Jeunet often comes close, as does Gilliam, and of course there's Bunuel, but no one else seems to achieve it so thoroughly as Lynch does. And yet his movies tend to have far more resonance and coherence than most with linear narratives. I've said it many times before, but every time I watch one again, I can't help but say it: his works often completely defy logic, but they always make perfect sense. I really wish that there were more filmmakers out there who were willing or able to make things that were as beautiful and compelling.

Also, Lost Highway only gets better and better the more you watch it. Interestingly, I think it's also his most "pop" movie, and I don't think it suffers at all for it. The soundtrack is radically different from any other Lynch film, and the acting is much more straightforward, without so much of that Lynchian stiltedness, among other things. I still hesitate to say it's definitely his best, but it's a strong contender for that top spot that the case only grows stronger for as time goes on.
