AiR Meeting #1 July 20, 2011
Introduction:
Intro to AiR project
Why CMY is involved
Why I am involved
Why participants are involved
Labeling exercise:
Part A:
Everyone took a sheet, and wrote a word that they think, or have experienced, others would write about them on a first-sight basis. Minus interaction.
Outcomes:
Florence: Asian
Loretta: Asian
Rubaba: Muslim/Innocent
Fei: Male
Bianca: Bohemian
Alia: Mute
Jose: Cool
Annie: Cute/Short
Discussed whether the words each person wrote came from a negative or positive attitude. Majority came from a negative perspective.
Asian: a way of categorizing and classifying all those from different Asian backgrounds into one. Sometimes the classification can be negative in the sense of stereotyping, and sometimes can be positive in the sense of knowing how to appropriately deal with the ‘other’.
Mute/Innocent: can be based on a stereotypical image of oppression, non-permission to speak/voice/express, thus leading to image of innocence, shyness and incapability to be other than that eg lying, swearing.
Male: based on outward appearance, and not knowing how to deal with the ambiguity. Is there a way to treat a man vs woman? Interesting to see how people can deal with the ambiguity.
Cute/short: sometimes height can have an effect on how smart or mature people think you are. Being perceived as ‘short’ might mean not being taken seriously, embarrassed in public (eg being physically picked up).
Part B:
What words do you WANT wider community/media to associate with you?
Outcomes:
Florence: --
Loretta: Asian (?)
Rubaba: Fashion
Fei: Hippie
Bianca: Circus (?)
Alia: Warm
Jose: Human being
Annie: Cute/Smart
TOPICS OF INTEREST:
Process vs Outcome. Debate between whether or not a specific term is required or not. Visit to Immigration Museum to see how they address ‘Identity’. Guidelines vs Instructions to artists interested in CCD projects. Family and Community support/lack of to members interested in engaging in the arts. Possibility of producing digital video explaining to parents/families/communities the importance of engagement in the arts.
