Let's get this out of the way: I don't ship these pairings. I range anywhere from "I'm apathetic about [name of pairing]" to "I violently dislike [name of pairing]" on these. But this is the last you'll hear of it. I'm not gonna write "I don't like this ship, but..." ten times, you can trust me on that one.
These are the moments that I enjoy, like, love, adore, worship, am over the moon for from pairings I don't personally ship. Maybe you do ship them yourself or maybe you don't, but I think there may just be something in here for everyone.
Enjoy!
Carrie & Aidan, Sex and the City, Change of a Dress
YoutubeCarrie: Oh my god. You still don't trust me.
Aidan: You don't even wear that ring on your finger.
Carrie: I am yours, there is no one else. I love you, but I can't marry you to make you trust me.
There aren't words enough for everything I love about this scene.
For starters, the writing is superb. I manages to sum up fairly quickly where both of them are coming from: Aidan can't trust Carrie anymore, no matter how much he tries (and I wouldn't expected him to), and he needs some tangible bond to hold onto, and even though she loves him, Carrie isn't ready to settle down and get married and commit to Aidan.
Basically, they're at an impasse and Aidan can't live with things the way they are. This scene has no good guy and no bad guy; you see where both of them are coming from and you know there's just nothing either of them can do to stop everything from falling apart.
I will say this, too, about the way Carrie is written: in emotionally tense moments, she says small, dumb things. When Aidan says he's gonna sleep in the other apartment, she says "Just for tonight, right". Which is so stupid, but it makes her feel more real to me. Mostly because I say dumb things at emotionally tense moments. She's just refusing to let it sink in that this is it. That they're done.
Sarah Jessica Parker and John Corbett are fantastic in this scene. Fantastic.
Ross & Rachel, Friends, The One With the Morning After
YoutubeRachel: No. I can't. You're a totally different person to me now. I used to think of you as someone who would never ever hurt me, ever. God, and now I can't stop picturing you with her. And it doesn't matter what you say or what you do. It's just changed everything. Forever.
This is Jennifer Aniston's best work. This scene, right here. This episode is probably the best in Friends history, in fact.
The lines I quoted break my heart every time I hear them because this is the most real their fight has ever been in the episode. There's been yelling and sniping jokes, but this is when she really lays out what Ross has done to her and how she'll never be able to look at him the same way again because of it. When she says that she used to think of him as someone who would never hurt her...that's the line that kills me. Her pain feels so real in that line. Everything did change forever after this moment. It's rare that one moment rocks a whole series, but this one truly did.
Like I said, Jennifer Aniston's best work.
Jackie & Kelso, That 70s Show, Love, Wisconsin Style
Kelso: I choose you.
Aw. ♥
Kelso had his faults (lots of them) but I never doubted that he loved Jackie. And it melted my heart a bit when, as an act of reciprocation for kissing another guy, Jackie offered to let him kiss another girl in The Hub, and Kelso chose her. It all got blown sky-high a few moments later, but I like to remember this moment as one of the most romantic Jackie and Kelso ever had.
Ned & Olive, Pushing Daisies, Girth
Olive is incredibly adorable, but it's hard to go up against the epicness of Ned/Chuck. She keeps having to learn that the hard way.
I love this scene because it's so sweet how big, tall Ned scoops up tiny little Olive and carries her out of harms way. The kiss was unexpected (to me and obviously Ned) but adorable in its context. Of course, Ned drops her as soon as he hears Chuck, but Olive still got a "Prince Charming" moment from the man she adored, so there's a small victory in that.
Sheldon & Penny, The Big Bang Theory, The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis
YoutubeSheldon: "To Sheldon: live long and prosper. Leonard Nimoy".
Penny: Yeah, he came into the restaurant. Sorry it's dirty, he wiped his mouth with it.
Sheldon: (freaks out) I possess the DNA of Leonard Nimoy?!
I've talked a lot about this scene in the past, so I'll just say, I never thought I'd see Sheldon hug anyone least of all Penny. He's just not that guy. But her gift to him was so perfect (I don't think she would ever imagine giving it to anyone else) and his gratitude and shock were so sincere that it made for an amazing, unexpected, and unforgettable moment.
Logan & Veronica, Veronica Mars, Ruskie Business
YoutubeLogan, Logan, Logan.
His last hope that his mother was still alive was dashed and he falls apart in the middle of the hotel lobby. I can't blame him at all.
I feel like this is probably one of the most powerful LoVe scenes. Logan and Veronica have a complicated history (they aren't together yet, and he's still making snarky comments at her left, right and center), but the fact that he can still let himself fall apart in front of her, and let himself hold on to her says a lot about the bond between them.
It's very beautiful and incredibly touching.
Sawyer & Kate, Lost, Whatever the Case May Be
They just look happy. After all of the things that have happened on the island, and all they've been through in their pasts, they genuinely look like they're happy and they're having fun with each other in this scene. I like simplicity; I think there's a lot of intimacy in it.
They just look like two people, having a swim and playing around. And I love that.
Tim & Tyra, Friday Night Lights, What to Do While You're Waiting
Tyra: There's a trait in the women in my family that just drives men crazy. Treat us like crap and always come back for more.
Tim: That's, uh. That's actually what I was here to talk to you about. I am truly sorry for everything that has happened, for what I've put you through, everything that happened with Lyla. I was a complete jerk and I am so sorry. If you would even consider giving me a second chance, Tyra, believe me it’ll be so different. Sorry.
Tyra: You know, so many times, I would have loved to hear those words come out of your mouth. God, I'd love to say yes, but I'd hate myself for it. I’d be a hypocrite you know? I guess timing is everything.
Ah, Tyra. My girl.
We never got to see the bulk of Tyra and Tim's relationship, but this scene gives you a pretty good idea how things have been between the two of them. It's painful for Tyra, because she has strong feelings for Tim, but she's been telling her mother the whole episode that she can't be in an unstable relationship where she's treated like crap just so she won't have to be alone. I love Tyra for being big enough to take her own advice and not make a hypocrite of herself, and I love Tim for maning up, admitting his mistakes, and offering to do better by her.
Even if it didn't come to anything, I don't think either of them come out of this scene the bad guy. Like Tyra said, it's all in the timing.
Angel & Cordelia, Angel the Series, You're Welcome
Cordelia: You'll win this in the end. I, uh, I just wish I could be there to see it.
Angel: What do you mean? You're not...?
Cordelia: I can't stay. This isn't me anymore. You can say goodbye to the gang for me, explain everything, once you understand.
Angel: That's gonna be never. I need you here.
Cordelia: Don't make this hard, Angel. I'm just on a different road, and this is my off ramp. Powers That Be owed me one, and I didn't waste it. I got my guy back on track.
Angel: Cordy...
Cordelia: We take what we can get champ, and we do our best with it. I'll be seeing you.
(she turns and starts to walk away)
Cordelia:Oh, what the hell...One for the road?
(she rushes to Angel, they embrace and kiss, the phone rings)
Angel: You know, um, I don't...I don’t need to get that.
Cordelia: That...you have to get.
(Angel walks towards the phone)
Cordelia: Oh, and you're welcome.
True story: I stared at my screen for several minutes after this episode ended, asking myself, "Did they really just do that?" Answer: Yes. They really just did that. And I totally didn't see it coming.
Cordelia getting Angel part-way off his path of complacency (I think Fred pushed him all the way off) was a good way for her to go out, and them having that one last moment before she poofed off for good was cathartic and lovely. I also loved her watching Doyle's video again and telling Angel how pissed she was at him for going out the way he did; but that she understood now, how he gave his last breath to make sure Angel kept fighting.
"You're Welcome" was an amazing episode, and this, as far as I'm concerned, is a wonderful end to Cordelia and Angel's relationship.
Buffy & Spike, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fool for Love
Buffy: What do you want now?
Spike: What's wrong?
Buffy: I don't want to talk about it.
Spike: Is there something I can do?
If this isn't the absolute perfect Spike/Buffy scene I will eat my hat.
Okay, so this is actually what set the ball rolling on this picspam. I saw a screencap of this scene and I thought, "Oh my god. I love that scene to an incredibly insane degree even though I don't like that ship." The rest is history.
I wish I could have found this scene on Youtube, but FOX, well...they're very good at keeping Buffy off Youtube. Poop on them.
The writing of this scene coupled with James and Sarah's acting is what really makes this scene as amazing as it is. It's simple, quiet, tense, awkward, understated, and oh so powerful it knocks the wind out of me. Buffy/Spike has never been better than it was at this moment.
