» History:
Kleio is the second daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne. She's the muse of History and is known as the Proclaimer. She's played her part in inspiring poets. She is known as the proclaimer and giver of sweetness (some stories add that she was the overseer of one of the Muses favored springs so the water drawn from it was always sweet). She was called upon to bring great and everlasting glory.
Much of her history is shared with her sisters. With them, she helped gather the pieces of Orpheus’ body and buried them. They also punished Marsyas (for losing his challenge with Apollo) and Thamysis (after losing his contest with the Muses themselves).
Kleio mocked Aphrodite for her love of Adonis and in revenge Aphrodite made her fall in love with Pierus, king of Macedonia. With Pierus, she gave birth to Hyacinthus (who was then killed by Zephyrus). Some myths also say she was the mother of Hymenaios.
» Personality:
Kleio's proud and tends to underestimate those around her. If provoked, she'll rashly jump into any challenge just to prove her superiority. Overall she's been lucky, she has had the support of the other Muses. At times her tongue has run off before she properly thought things through and has been punished for it. Since she is the inspiration for greatness, she feels she must be equally as great so tends to look down at other people.
She has a terrible sweet tooth, she loves anything sweet. People included. Physical closeness doesn't bother her at all. When she's excited over something she'll share with anyone who will listen. She's more an orator then a singer like some of her sisters. She will happily take the time to explain something, especially with children. She also loves to tell stories and knows all the legends and tales by heart. Of course, with history, she always knows best and she’ll be offended if anyone dares to correct her. Challenge her knowledge or (god forbid) prove her wrong and she won't forget. She and the other Muses punished people who challenged them and she’ll hold a grudge until she can get her revenge. Once she gets her revenge, the offense is not given any more thought. She won’t forget of course, but she doesn’t care.
She tends to prefer the company of books and scrolls to other people. Not out of shyness, but normal people tend not to interest her very much. Their stories are too short or their deeds not that great. Without meaning too, she can be very judgmental (such as with Aphrodite). Generally, she finds the gods distasteful for their lavishness and petty squabbles, except for the other Muses and Apollo. It all seems very pointless to her.
Kleio won't usually seek out company, and she can be very quiet, even when she does. If the topic turns to something she knows (history), she will open up quickly and can be quite talkative.
Sometimes for those who are truly special, she'll relax enough to sing around them. She's not as good as some of her sisters, but (in her opinion) better than everyone else besides them and Apollo, or her sisters and Apollo are the only ones she’ll admit are better than her anyway. Family is especially important to her since hers has always been small and close and if she needs support, her sisters will be the first ones she goes to. She gives Calliope the most respect since she is older.
To Kleio, everything someone needs to know can be learned from history. She ignores doesn’t notice most modern inventions and discoveries unless it affects her on a daily basis. She's pretty terrible with computers. She has a tendency to forget about things happening in the present like appointments and assignments unless she gets constantly reminded of it, they’re just not as important to her.
Kleio does have a vain streak, she won't leave her home without taking the time to primp first, making sure her makeup is properly applied and her hair done and won't ever, ever walk out her front door in sweats, going naked would be preferable to something so common and drab.
» Sample Journal:
[video: Kleio looks disheveled and confused and then the video suddenly turns off and it’s audio only, so her grumbling can be heard. Something about arrogant jerks and titans. There’s loud clicking of keys as if she’s jabbing at them very hard.]
How does this thing work? I don’t get…what is this…
[Video comes back on. The camera’s been moved and sees only her shoulder and neck.]
I want no part of these games. I didn’t do anything this time to provoke this.
[She finally realizes that the little image of a shoulder is her shoulder and the camera is quickly pushed back so it’s on her face again. She’s scowling now and her hair has been mostly fixed to try and look presentable.]
How is the world supposed to function properly if no one is left in their place?
» Sample Roleplay:
Kleio eyed the strange rope that blocked off the hallway that led to an exhibit labeled Egypt. It was thick and somehow she knew it was called velour. Out of curiosity she ran her fingers over it before it dipped too low for her to reach without ending over. The texture was weird, and she wasn’t sure if she liked it or not so she pushed the knowledge aside to maybe remember later. She had just started to step over it when a voice called out for her to stop. “Excuse me…excuse me, Miss. You can’t go in there.”
Kleio glared at the man, biting her tongue sharply to keep form snapping back at him for daring to tell her what she could do. Earlier, she had been lectured on some dos and don’ts of this time she had been dumped in. Apparently insisting that she was a muse and a simple mortal could not tell her what to do was not acceptable anymore. “Why not?” She asked instead, telling herself he was simply doing what he had to do. Though a quick glance revealed he was probably the worst armed guard she had ever seen. What had happened to spears and swords?
“This area is closed to the public. It’s being renovated.” The guard explained.
Kleio looked down the hall and sighed. She wasn’t the public, and she told him as much. At his confused look, she relented and pulled out the ID that had been given to her. Using it was as bad as admitting her acceptance of being stuck in this strange place.
“Apparently, I work here.” She smiled tightly when he took the ID from her and examined it closely. None of it made her any happier. She had to wait to be judged by a mortal. A boring one at that.
“I uh…I guess you do. Sorry Ms. Bryant.”
Kleio grimaced at the name. Even if no one knew her so therefore it shouldn’t even matter, she didn’t get why her name had to be changed. Name was everything, how was she supposed to celebrate peoples deeds if everyone was constantly changing who they are? The one assigned to her felt flat and meaningless.
There had been a mention of lots of books for her to bury her nose in or something like that, but for now she was still not seeing any good about this place. It smelled, people were rude and everything was lit by bright garish lights. She was sure she could count on one hand the number of books she’d seen since her arrival.
“May I?” She gestured down the hall.
“Of course.”
She reluctantly took back the ID (maybe she could accidentally lose it and be done with this silly name) and headed down the hallway to see what else this age had forgotten.
