went to lakeland the other day.
(land of lakes, but that is another city.)
we went to visit my mother's friend, a cancer survivor
she has a garden in her backyard.
oranges, tangerines yucca, guava, lemons,
grapefruit.
we plucked grapefruit right off the trees,
big fat spheres,
their insides red and juicy.
i don't even eat grapefruit but I picked bags full
washed them when I got home so they look like supermarket fruit,
too pristine to eat.
now they're homed in a bright and cheery fruit bowl.
