Promises are like pie crusts: Easily made, easily broken.

"People should know where people stand. I've always believed that."

Yesterday after watching the marathon of romantic comedies (whilst working), I saw the last half of what I'm pretty sure is one of the last episodes of The Practice. They were making way for the spin-off, anyway, which should actually be a really entertaining show.

I'm not a big fan of The Practice. In fact, I've probably seen about 32 minutes in my whole entire life, including the half-hour I watched last night. But it hooked me. Just that last little bit. It had a great deal of intensity and was extremely well-written.

Anyway, at the end of the show, James Spader's character went to THE law firm. When they asked him what he was doing there, he said, "I guess I'm a sucker for closure. Don't confuse it with sentimentality...Look, people should know where people stand. I've always believed that."

Because of the industry I study and in which I work, is should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me that I find a great deal of truthful phrases from the tube. "People should know where people stand" is such a simple statement, but it's very true. And the simplicity of it cuts to the core of the message: "Let's cut through the bullshit and say what we really mean -- good or bad." Call it "not playing games" or "keeping it real" or whatever you want.

I'm tired of broken promises, but no two-bit promise-breaker is going to bring me down. I'm packing heat, and her name is Success.
