This just in...

I was at work this morning (on a cigarette break, not smoking) when someone asked me, "Did you hear about News 9?" I hadn't, and the news was startling. Perhaps I should have seen it coming. This summer, I applied only to two places: KSAT and News 9. Obviously, I'm glad they wanted me at KSAT.

An event like this encourages introspection. It also encourages people to see the mortality in their own careers. The people at News 9 just showed up one morning, and there was no work. Houston's Time Warner all-news channel is also off the air, but Austin's Capital News 9 is still up and running. I guess it's profitable.

Anyway, the sudden yanking of the channel was jarring, and some of the 90+ people looking for jobs will go to local stations. It's worrisome. Now is the time to be good.

And now is a critical time in the industry as a whole. Not only is the HDTV thing happening really soon, but we're living in an increasingly digital world. Most of you reading this grew up digital. The older folks in television didn't. We are now in a transition phase. those who are older have different ideas about how things should work. It's always been like this, but now this difference is a much bigger deal than ever before. Of those who didn't grow up digital, only those who are very good at what they do will excel. I work with some of those people...and some of the other kind.

Happy weekend.
