Lightning-speed update, then back to my new books!

This whole...online journal thing is pretty presumptuous. We're all assuming that other people want to read our daily bullshit.

My daily bullshit:

-Nic and I are cruisin' along. It's amazing what living together, equally contributing to bills and being engaged will do for a couple that was already crazy in love. We've picked a date: October 23, 2010, but we haven't even started talking about anything else. We want something small, low-key...possibly followed by a kegger. Who knows?

-She and I were McCain and Bush, respectively, for Halloween. It was pretty awesome...even though I remembered I had Open House at the School early on Saturday morning and just decided to stay around here. Because of that, Deni ended up doing nothing, Addis was baffled by my lack of appearance, and I felt guilty and like garbage for it most of the night and right on through to the present. Ugh. I'm a bad friend.

-Work is fabulous, comme d'habitude. I'm getting more comfortable speaking French with the teachers and French staff members, and my boss is off to Ottawa for a week. That'll give me time to clean out my office closet and get some SERIOUS filing done for admissions and fund development. Sidenote: I LOVE admissions and fund development.

-I'm being a super dork and checking out Brown's creative writing MFA program. Might as well, since the more I'm in a school environment, the less and less I think I'd be a good teacher at any level but college. Plus, they pay for everything, as long as you do a teacher assistantship in your second year. And you get a stipend. But...this all hinges on me getting INTO the program. That means three recommendation letters (I can think of two right now) on top of a writing sample. And I have no clue what to submit, as deep down, I think it's all pretty much garbage. Maybe this is out of my league.

-In an effort to get more short story experience, I bought a sweet anthology of American short stories...edited by Joyce Carol Oates, my girl. She's got a creepy side to her, and she's a woman, so the anthology is off-beat and includes lesser-known works by women writers along with the standards. I just finished "Rip Van Winkle," and now I'm into this story about a man named Peter Rugg. I kind of like early 19th century American stuff, since it centers in New England and the moral undertones are so clear. I'm just hoping to get some ideas on style and content for a writing sample, if I'm going to go through with this.

-Oh! And I've officially started my collection of classics; I'm ordering a few books at a time from Amazon.com and either reading them for the first time or re-reading them. Along with the short stories, I just got in Pilgrim's Progress, Don Quixote, and Robinson Crusoe. I don't know what prompted me to do this; maybe it's the lack of fiction in our house right now. My shelves are currently stocked with all  feminist theory,
author bios/journals, and everything Plath has ever written; not exactly that "take-me-away" kind of stuff you want to read on a slow Sunday afternoon. I'm excited for awesome fiction.

-I'm sorry, have we met? I'm a total dork, nice to make your acquaintance.

-The political blogging is totally awesome. I'm having a lot of fun, and people who don't even know me are responding to my commentary and telling me that they're passing on the link to my pieces to their friends/family. It's pretty nice to have my ego stroked, not gonna lie. Maybe it'll boost my confidence for Brown.

-In other news, Britt came and spent the weekend. It's always nice to have people visit, since we're not exactly "on the way" for, like, anyone. She went out with us on Halloween, we lounged around all day yesterday, ordered pizza and watched Wife Swap, and then I made us all some delicious brunch this morning before sending B off to New Bedford to visit her sister. Now, I have the house to myself, as Nic went to the flea market in Raynham with Rachele. I'm about to curl up on the couch with my short stories and refuse to move unless I have to pee or get a grumbly in my tumbly.

Okay, off to finish Peter Rugg. Hope everyone's day is going well and that you're all fully recovered from All Hallow's Eve. Yikes.

Oh yea, and vote, bitches.
