Blog Action Day: The Environment

Oct 15, 2007 15:59

So I'll try not to gripe at you, dear flist, about yadayadayada global warming this, extinction that, cause even though they are SHAZAM SUPER IMPORTANT, we've all heard enough of that to last a lifetime.

Buuuuuuuuut...
Since LJ is an international extravaganza, this issue seems especially fitting...

You know when you're a kid and the world's bigger than you can imagine - people everywhere, countries and continents galaxies away, the planet a gigantic roiling ball of whatever your kiddy mind chooses to make it? Yeah. Maybe my generation is being yanked out of that frame of mind more quickly than most, maybe not, but day by day my Earth shrinks and though I lost the delusion that everything can be fixed ages ago, each new issue tends to pick at the open wound of ferseriously?shit. I'm taking APES this year (AP Environmental Science), and though the curriculum is mostly self-explanatory & my teacher tends to be positive on most issues, some really freaky things still stand out in my mind. For example:

The Earth's carrying capacity (depending on a lot, yeah) is estimated to be 11.5 billion people. We're currently coming up on 7 billion and are expected to reach capacity by 2050.

Eep.

And just because that scares the hell out of me, let's counter it with a happy fact (pro-human for once):

We fixed the hole in the ozone layer!  It is healing itself! *yayz*

So I'm done. Basically, just - life gets shorter everyday, our planet gets smaller everyday, and it's on us. So try your best to:

-Recycle! (Oh gawds, not that again - yes, yes, I know.  It just makes me madmadmad when people throw perfectly recyclable things away two feet from the bin.  ARGH.)
-Don't drive to your neighbors house! Feet, people, feet!
-Eat more veggies! (Dude, I don't actually like many veggies and I'm still a vegematarian...what's up with that?  Oh, I know - cheese! carbs!)
-TRY!

Here, I link you some pretty resources.

Anyhoo, I know it's overstressed & we've dug ourselves into a hugely huge hole (*cough*electing Bush*coughcough*re-electing Bush - WTF, people?*cough*), but that doesn't stop technology from being awesomely promising, nor does it stop this from being like whoa - seriously important - let's not all die.  Yet.

What's that you say?  I am guilt-tripping you with cute and fuzzy polar bears?
Yes, yes very good.

THX ♥
