Short Story

There was very little Steve could do now, he thought. He had never really been the problem-solving type before. Besides, who would ever expect him to be the one to fix everything? It simply wasn't his responsibility. He hurried about his business, attempting to ignore the circumstances that were clearly giving everyone else quite a difficult time.

Can you blame him? You're probably thinking he should have stepped up and made a difference. That's what we're raised to believe, right? So many stories feature heroes that brave impossible odds to make a real change in their lives and in the lives of others. Regular people thrust into greatness, or larger than life madmen that can't be stopped until their noble goals are achieved and the villains are vanquished.

Well, why should real life be any like fiction? That's the point of stories, isn't it? To be unusual and different and entertaining. Who says real people have to overcome adversity, or grapple with challenges. Wouldn't most of us rather just have a plain, uneventful life? Or at least, not full of the kind of events we see in the theatre, or read in books.

At any rate, Steve moved on and I choose not to blame him. You'll have to draw your own conclusions. But don't expect help from me. In fact, don't expect me to explain whatever was happening to him, because I don't like your tone of voice. I'm through here.
