It really seems like there's a certain group of people in the US whose brains just broke when a black man was elected president. Somehow it strained something in their psyche beyond its tolerances, and things just went entirely off the rails. Case in point:

This sort of thing really makes you want to despair for the future of the country, doesn't it? Oh, that and the moon landing hoax people.

ETA: This birther did seem to discover an interesting "exploit" of social programming. Apparently (at least in a group like that) if you just start saying the pledge of allegiance some other people will follow and eventually everyone will do it in order not to look unpatriotic, even if it's totally random and disruptive to whatever is going on.

I also had the thought that it would have been interesting to point out to that lady that Obama has a grandfather who fought in WWII as well.
