Today I tried to access my public AP around my apt. I kept incessantly getting kicked off and had a poor quality connection. After doing a site survey, I discovered that there were two APs working on the same channel. I then proceeded to log into the public APs config and was able to change the channel number.
From there, a lightbulb went on... What if? Now thats just the dangerous question I needed....
- What if I broadcasted an AP on the same channel?
- Gave that AP the exact same SSID name as the first AP that interrupted my signal?
- Set the same encryption settings (ie. WEP/WPA/no protection)?
- Emulate the MAC address to that of the first router?
I am thinking that there are going to be a few confused and disgruntled neighbors.
