demf - day 3 / mutek - day 1

May 31, 2006 12:25

-- had fun with my cousin in Windsor, played some ping-pong, discovered the acid trip that is Australian children's television, The Wiggles, drove back to Detroit with him and his family to Auburn Hills and had a delicious lunch at La shish. Also got a tour of the infamous 8 Mile area before getting dropped off in Greek Town.
-- saw Derrick May and Chemlab put on good shows
-- Otto Von Schirach did an insane live PA, but had a lot of technical difficulties. He sure knows how to do industrial covers of Prince jams.
-- Richard Devine did his usual laptop insanity, not as interesting as it used to be
-- Nitzer Ebb sounded great... their first show in 11 years. They had the singer and two people playing digital drum kits in the back. All the hits were played, but didn't really hear anything new... reminded me of the whole Pixies reunion cash-in. Fun little nostalgia trip though.
-- Hawtin took the main stage and played to an ocean of people... another awesome set and cool visuals.
-- Jerry put out the bat signal and it was off to some top secret afterparty
-- It turned out to be the festival organizer party at Oslo (a sushi restaurant that has a dance floor area underneath it)
-- Jerry got in immediately, but me, Donte, Paul, and Zach were stuck like chucks along with all the other wannabes outside
-- Lots of people tried to get in, but to no avail. Finally, Zach gets in and then calls my cell saying "come to the side door. NOW."
-- I'm on the phone with him and he says "do you have everyone with you? ok, good... stand right behind the door... ready? 1, 2, THREE!" The door busts open and a bunch of people try and squeeze their way through in front of us. Zach is there with a girl next to him who yells out "SEATTLE!" and the three of us are counted one by one as we are pulled into the club. It was like some sort of Navy Seal operation and made for a fun little adventure.
-- once inside, the place was relatively empty to when we were there just the night before to see Stacey Pullen. There were maybe 50-100 people through the course of the night... very intimate. Met some cool people from Paxahau and learned more of Jerry's notoriety
-- Marc Houle kicked things off and then handed the turntables over to Richie who delivered one of the most amazing sets of music I've heard for three hours straight all the way till 5 am. He finished things off by playing this ambient techno track (Vapourspace maybe?) at a really low volume... we were all silent, hanging on every note and then he just faded it out and that was it. Gave me chills it was so good.

-- gathered the crew and got some breakfast at Mickie D's
-- back at the hotel, I find my iPod is missing, tell the front desk, they ask a few questions, and it's obvious that the guy who delivers the freshly baked cookies must've taken it. Hotel manager is super cool about it and they'll be reimbursing me to get a replacement.
-- gathered my things and went directly to the airport courtesy of my cousin... sleep count = 0.
-- Zach and I run into Eddie at the gate for our flight to Montreal and reminisce on the prior evening's activities
-- got a short nap on the flight, cab ride to the hotel, find the door to my apartment is locked when I was instructed it would be open
-- went back down to the lobby where a cute Montrealean named Elise got the master key and let me in
-- took a 3 hour nap, got my keys slipped under the door, found the nearby metro station and headed to the Decibel loft

-- had some mediocre sushi at Taro with Sean, Rita, Raph, Tanya, and Zach
-- chilled at their sweet loft for a bit, saw some reality tv porno, soap opera thing on Montreal tv, laughed lots
-- walked a mile or so back to my apartment, chatted with Noele and Jeff online for a bit... Jeff says "welcome to my life" and related about how this lifestyle totally distorts your sense of time.
-- Looked out my window for a while before bed... the city is so beautiful... I'll have a bunch of pictures posted at some point.

-- woke up this morning to the sound of loud banging in the halls... they're doing a bunch of construction and its very annoying... I have to leave my apartment door open all day for some paint to dry... the person I'm renting from says "oh, don't worry about that, I leave my door open all the time."... doesn't give me much solace after having my iPod ganked.
-- recapped the last 2 days on LJ and now off to find some food and hang out on Saint-Laurent street.
-- tonight: Pierre Bastien, Hrdvsion, Clark, Jackson & his Computer Band, NomIg. awesome.
