Luna knows Harry isn't himself these days. She can't blame him; she wouldn't be herself either. So she suggests they meet and "forest watch" one night.
"What's forest watching?" Harry asks.
"Just wander into the Forbidden Forest and watch the creatures. It'll be good for you to... get away."
He seems hesitant, but agrees to meet her.
They walk though the forest together, Harry more cautiously than Luna.
"It's different from last time I was here," he says. "Actually, the last... many times."
"How many times have you been here?" Luna asks.
"Not going there."
"That's fair." Luna knows the rules. She had to make them for herself at the age of nine.
The stars are bring above them. They look up.
"You read stars, don't you?" Harry asks.
Luna shakes her head. "I don't believe humans can."
"Of all the things you believe, you don't believe the one thing many people - especially wizards and witches - do believe in?"
Luna shrugs. "I said I don't think humans can, not that no one can't. Centaurs can, because they were meant to. We're meant to try, but mostly, we're meant to just see where they take us. And thank them."
"For what?"
"For showing us light in the dark."
Luna hadn't meant for this statement to be poignant, but Harry squeezes her hand. He then withdraws it, and Luna takes it back.
"It's okay," she said. "Sometimes you need one."
She's never thought of Harry has anything other than a friend before. But as they stand in the light, the only humans around, she realizes that the stars are leading her somewhere very unexpected.
