Title: Busy Work
Fandom: Law & Order
Characters: Jamie Ross, Other. Mentions of Adam Schiff.
Rating: G
Word Count: 466
Summary: Jamie may be a new ADA, but she's no legal novice. If only her expertise could be put to good use, instead of doing grunt work.
Author's note: Set about 2 months before Jamie begins working with Jack McCoy. For diana_hawthorne, who helped inspire this madness. And with thanks to mtwendyr who helped me do the math. ;-)

Jamie Ross hung up the telephone and made a note on the legal pad in front of her. She looked at the next number on the list and began dialing again, suppressing an annoyed grunt. It was busy work - stuff that the more experienced assistant district attorneys gave to the newbies - and she was sick of it. Unlike many of her fresh-from-law-school colleagues, she’d already spent a significant amount of time in criminal court, representing defendants for her ex-husband’s firm, Steinert & Gorton.

“Prosecuting is different,” Adam Schiff told her four months ago when he hired her. “It’s not just ‘the opposite of defending.’”

She knew that. There was a lot she knew and Jamie only wanted the chance to put it to use for good. It wasn’t that she was ashamed of all the work she’d done as a defense attorney, but just the thought of some of her former clients made her stomach turn.

“Hey, Jamie - we’re going to lunch - do you want to come with?” A young blonde ADA paused in front of her desk and Jamie stopped dialing the phone. Already heading out the door were two equally fresh-faced ADAs - a brunette woman and a redheaded man who looked about twelve. The two of them were chuckling to themselves about something or other.

“I’m good, thanks.” Jamie gave them a slightly forced smile. She’d gone once, the first week on the job. The conversation about late nights out, law school follies and who was sleeping with whom only made her feel old and out of place. She wasn’t that much older…Still, where were the other working moms? Or at least people whose conversation was less…trivial?

With a sigh, she got back to the list of phone numbers she needed to call.

Half an hour later, just as she was debating whether to go to lunch or have something delivered, an unfamiliar voice interrupted her thoughts.

“Excuse me, Jamie?”

Jamie looked up. A tall, dark-haired man, about 6’3, with broad shoulders and a confident air, was standing in front of her desk. She raised a brow. “Yes?”

“I was told that you could help me with a case,” the man said by way of introduction. “I’m supposed to be second-chairing, but the lead prosecutor got sick and I don’t have a lot of experience with cases involving children. Adam Schiff said to come see you.”

“He did?” Jamie was surprised, but glad. She had experience in that area and would be more than happy to put her knowledge to use.

The man nodded.

“Sure,” Jamie said, “I can help as much as I’m able.” She even smiled. “I’m sorry, what did you say your name was?”

“I didn’t.” He leaned forward and held out his hand. “Marcus Woll.”
