There was some incomplete information on that front, but it has wound up being at least partly a good news story.

I had nonrefundable fares, but that still leaves the option of getting some flight credit back after a change/cancel fee. On a regularly purchased fare, the fee is a deduction from what you paid, and you're credited the rest. On a flight booked on reward points, which one of mine was, the fee is an out of pocket expense to get your points back.

Unfortunately, the website said that the fee was $100. My base fare was under $100, with fees and taxes putting it a few dollars over, so I thought I'd end up with next to nothing for the hassle.

Cue Hurricane Irene, and waivers of fees. At first they didn't cover my return date, but then got extended. I went to cancel online. Turns out that on fares under $100, the fee is only $50, but I had to start the cancellation process to know that. They have thanked me for suggesting they make that information available up front.

End result for me: full flight credit on one, forfeiture of points on the other.

That's annoying, but, better than being completely out...
