Current Issues
What do you think about:
5) World Involvement in Iraq: World involvement is one thing; the United States playing Global Authority Figure is another. I tend to take a more isolated point of view (not totally isolated, mind you) in that I believe we and our allies should make defense the number one priority and basically mind our own business. No, totalitarian dictators are never good, but I don't think it should be one country's place to govern the actions of another.
6) Cloning and stem cell research: I know enough about stem cell research to know that for the most part, that's harmless. The cells that are used have the potential to someday become human, in that a rock has the potential to someday become sand. As for cloning, I think if we're responsible enough to keep it in moderation and use it for good, it should be fine. Of course, I never said we were that responsible.
7) Same-sex marriage: Oh, for the love of God, just let them be happy together.
8) Internet filesharing: This is an issue about which I feel strongly. I feel that it should be completely up to the artist whether or not they want to charge for their music. Then and only then should the government take action. Should I ever become a popular musician, I'd get a job at the 7-11 to ensure that all of my fans would have access to my music. The greed of the major record labels and the commercialism enforced by that greed is sickening.
9) The death penalty: Call me a coldhearted bitch, but I say go for it. Someone who has been proven without a doubt to be a rapist or murderer doesn't deserve to have my mother's tax dollars supporting his life.
10) The quality of journalism and the need for truth in news: To adequately answer this question I'd have to write an essay. I'll just leave it at this: I place no faith in the global media.
11) New cabinet appointees: Democracy, my ass.
12) Religious zealots: This really sickens me. How can anyone claim to know anything about God? In the original Aramaic, Genesis 1:1 says that in the beginning there was the Word, and the Word was Yahweh (Jehovah). Now, as accurately translated as possible, those words mean Light, or Love. The fact that we carry out all manner of war and destruction in the name of Love is something I won't comprehend in this lifetime.
Intellect
13) Name a book or movie that changed your life, or at least really made you think. Why (or How)? This might sound silly at first glance, but the movie Dogma really shook the way I think about religion. Its explanation of the fact that Jesus' original idea of unity and all-around love has been bastardized and factioned out made me wonder why, exactly, I was subscribing to such a corrupt idea. Look behind the fornication jokes--that movie's got some real substance.
14) Name 3 books you have read in the last year (be honest): Good Omens (Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett); The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald); and a re-read of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (J.R.R. Tolkien).
15) Who is your favorite artist and why? (Yes; this is a very broad question. It could be a painter, musician, actor, writer, etc.) Well, depending on what day you asked me this question I'm sure I'd have a different answer, but the one I'll pick for today would be Maynard James Keenan, who happens to be the lead singer of Tool and A Perfect Circle. His views of religion, the presentation of emotions hidden from oneself and others, and the scathing satire of today's society all add up to him being a brilliant person and artist. (For examples of each, I recommend, in order, "Judith" by A Perfect Circle, "Prison Sex" by Tool, and "Ænema" by Tool.)
16) Cite a quote or song lyric that relates to you or your life and explain why: "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams." -Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Despite that being one of my favorite movies, I chose that quote because I find myself to be both. My life revolves around music, and I spend a good 80% of my time off in a corner of my own mind somewhere, removing myself from the accepted reality and dreaming up my own.
About You
17) Label your political standpoint: I'd really rather not. Democrats bother me, and republicans scare me. I'm rather close to being a Libertarian, but not quite. I would have voted for Ralph Nader the last go around, had I been old enough.
18) If had to dedicate yourself to one issue or cause, what would it be? Increasing the status quo as far as intelligence is concerned.
19) If you could meet anyone (dead or alive), who would it be and why? Stephen Hawking. I'd love to see his scientific input on some of my philosophical ramblings.
20) If you were to die today, what would have been your greatest achievement? I can think of at least one person whose life has been considerably altered for the better because of me, and a couple whose lives have been saved. I'd say that's something to write home about.
21) What are you passionate about? Grammar.
22) What disgusts you more than anything? Willful ignorance.
23) If you had to choose, who would you rather let die: 100 cute puppies, or 1 grimy homeless man? This is very difficult, as life is life to me. Assuming both are innocent, I suppose it would be the puppies, but had the homeless man done something horrid, I guess he'd deserve it more. :/
24) How do you measure success? Success can directly be measured by the happiness of the beholder.
Further Thinking
25) Are humans alone in the universe? Probably not.
26) Who was Shakespeare, really? There's speculation that he was more than one guy. But to me, he was a man with an uncanny knack for taking basic, simple stories and embellishing a whole lot.
27) What is the meaning of life? To search.
28) Can there be love without hate, and vice versa? Nope. Balance is essential.
