the past two days have been crazy. walking walking and walking (the strike, you know), as well as a number of unexpected encounters.
tuesday after my dentist appt. i ended up walking from the upper west side to the indian restaurant on 6th street and 1st avenue, picking up verd on the way (she lent me a scarf too!) and meeting up with maureen and matt. dinner was excellent, and i didn't feel guilty at all about having a grand feast, because i knew i'd be walking back. according to mapquest, the distance from my apartment building to the royal indian restaurant is 5.77 miles. on the way back home, somewhere in the 50s, i recognized caitlin who graduated saint ignatius with me in '98. she was with her whole family. crazy! ended up hanging out for awhile with caitlin, andrew, and paul a. (also from our class, still friends with andrew). so random! i mentioned to caitlin that andrew and i were planning to go to the christmas pageant today, and she said she'd come too.
today after my gyn. appt., which i ealked through central park to get to, i went to the met. saw the van gogh drawings exhibit, which was great. they even had my two favorite van gogh paintings, of the cypress trees. in an adjacent section i found prints by hiroshige and hokusai that were really beautiful. i checked out some caravaggio (flashback to my western art class), spent some time looking at the manets and monets. even stumbled upon this crazy exhibition of photographs from the mid-1800s involving mediums, seances, ectoplasm (so weird), and apparitions.
spent the rest of the afternoon in the st. ignatius/ 86th st. area since i really didn't want to walk all the way home and back. did some gift shopping, made some phone calls, wandered around. from the window of starbucks i caught eyes with april, who graduated from earlham last may and is actually a nanny in lexie's building. we chatted for a few minutes.
then i was walking around 84th street when i stumbled upon john s. (also from st ignatius class of '98) who was randomly doorman-ing it at 125 east 84th. SUCH HAPPENSTANCE! smoked a marlboro and talked.
went to the pageant with caitlin and andrew arrived a few minutes late. we sat in the way back. it was very, very different from our pageant. i liked it better the old way, not to say this one wasn't good. saw mr. sullivan and mr. meador, who was sad when i told him my dad had passed away, cause they were buddies for awhile. mr sullivan gave us a tour (and his phone number haha)... we went through the church into the auditorium, upstairs into the hallways i hadn't seen in ages. the old classrooms, same old desks and metal chairs. i felt my emotions stirring. we saw the changes made to the 5th floor, including a great art room mr. meador surely deserved after years of being moved around an not having adequate art space. but the best part was when we saw sr. seton (2nd grade teacher and probably my favorite teacher at the school) in her same classroom, getting ready to leave. she looked at me and, after a few seconds, immediately grew excited and said "" and hugged me. she didn't recognize andrew right away, cause he looks pretty different than he did in grammar school. she even gave andrew and i notebooks of ours that she had saved. from 1991-2. i could have cried.
after we left, we went to mimis pizza and walked through the park talking about all our grammar school memories. it was freezing cold but we were having a great time. andrew walked me home and we kissed goodbye.
