Kibum thinks all romantic relationships will eventually come to be a comfortable companionship more than anything else. Once the honeymoon period is over and the couple has been through their fair share of arguments to reach that common ground, nothing seems to be new and exciting anymore. Take Minho and him for example; their relationship is just so stable that it’s almost boring. The intense passion they had at the beginning has visibly subsided.

Gone are the days when they were hopelessly infatuated, almost a little starry-eyed over one another. It’s not that they don’t love each other as much anymore. They still do, Kibum is confident about this, but when they have never been the sort of couple to be vocal about their feelings right from the start, just imagine the chances of them openly expressing their love for each other now... Yeah, chances to hear something as straightforward as those three significant words are almost non-existent. True, words may not mean much and Kibum believes that actions speak louder than words. That’s precisely why he honestly misses the early days when there’s constant touching and of course, sex all the damn time. At least that shows him exactly how much Minho is in love with him.

They are also at the stage where they seldom get into arguments. It’s almost as if they’re too lazy to pick a fight with each other. Any normal person in a relationship would be envious of this but Kibum actually wishes they would fight because that would at least bring some excitement in their life. Lately, Minho and he are just so used to each other that they’ve both been annoyingly accommodating. Not even a single insult has been thrown at each other for the longest time. Something just needs to happen to spice up their relationship or keep the romance alive. It has been close to five years since they’ve got together and now, Kibum’s in the phase where their stability with each other annoys him. It’s like they’re only together because of habit. What’s worse, they’ve just become another couple who have grown careless enough to stop trying so hard.... or at all.

Kibum has had enough. He doesn’t want to feel this way anymore. If Minho doesn’t seem like he’s going to change the situation anytime soon, Kibum will.

It’s when they’re touring Chile that Kibum reaches his boiling point. He understands that it’s tough for them to be a couple in public but he at least expects his boyfriend to cut the act in private. If he doesn’t get the attention he wants from Minho in public, so be it. But if Minho continues to pay more attention to his phone than him when they’re back in their hotel room at night, Kibum isn’t going to stay silent anymore.

“Hey Min...” Kibum begins calmly as he settles next to Minho on the bed and pokes his boyfriend on his arm.

“Hmm?” Minho responds without turning his eyes away from the phone.

“You’ve been very busy with your phone...” Kibum points out as he tries to peek at Minho’s phone but he can hardly make out anything because of the light reflection.

“Mmh.” Minho replies, his fingers now busy typing.

“Seems important...” Kibum utters while leaning closer to Minho, chin now resting on his shoulder, hoping to get his boyfriend’s attention.

“Mmm.” Minho hums once again, eyes still trained on his phone, not even reacting the slightest bit with Kibum so close to him.

Three monosyllabic replies, although in different tones, is enough to anger Kibum and so he does something he knows he’ll hate if it happens to him.

He resorts to snatching Minho’s phone away.

“Kibum!” Minho immediately tries to snatch his phone back but Kibum throws it aside and holds him firmly down on the bed.

“What’s so important that you have to use every minute of your free time on your phone?” Kibum asks as he stares down at his boyfriend.

“Personal matters that shouldn’t be your concern, bum.” Minho answers, as annoyed as the blond before him, before he questions, “What are you getting all worked up for?”

“I’m not asking you this as a bandmate, Minho, I’m asking as your boyfriend.” Kibum huffs, “Or have you forgotten that we’re more than colleagues?”

Minho frowns, “What are you getting at?”

“Seems like I’m the only one who feels like there’s something wrong with us...” Kibum mutters to himself.

Of course, with their close proximity, Minho catches every word Kibum says. He looks into Kibum’s eyes, a concerned expression now on his face.

“What’s wrong?”

Kibum groans, punching Minho on his chest, “Your phone getting more love from you than me, that’s what’s wrong!”

Minho is left speechless, blinking at Kibum as he takes a minute to soak in his boyfriend’s accusation.

Having to be this direct with Minho leaves Kibum completely defeated. He rolls away from Minho and lies flat on his stomach on the other half of the bed, stuffing his face into the pillow just to muffle the groans he has to let out to vent his frustration.

“Is it too much to ask for your attention?” Kibum says into the pillow, voice still muffled, and only looks up when he feels Minho’s hand on his shoulder.

Minho only catches the sound of ‘tion’ when he turns Kibum around so he’s still left confused. However, he does know that Kibum is troubled and upset for a reason that’s most probably related to him.

“Bum...”

“Don’t look at me like that,” Kibum pouts, turning to lie on his back as he runs a hand through his hair and stares at the ceiling, “I feel like I’m making a huge fuss out of nothing...”

“You’re not.” Minho quickly replies, “I’m always slow about these things… you know that… so tell me, what exactly is bothering you, bum? It can’t just be because I’m paying too much attention to my phone…”

“You’re right.” Kibum admits, “It’s not. It’s more than that… it’s everything about us.”

“Everything?”

“Let me ask you a question.” Kibum starts, turning to meet Minho’s eyes, “Do you remember how it was like when we first got together?”

Minho is caught off guard with Kibum’s random question but after the momentary shock, he nods slowly in reply.

“Do you…” Kibum then continues, having to pause for a moment before he begins again, “Do you miss those times?”

“Is this a trick question?” Minho asks in an instant, relaxing himself on the bed so that they’re lying next to each other, face to face.

“Just be honest, idiot.” Kibum slaps Minho on his arm.

Minho smiles and finally answers, “I don’t.”

“Why not?”

“I like where we are now.”

“What’s there to like?” Kibum scoffs

“Well, for one… I still have you…”

Kibum raises his eyebrows, unimpressed, as Minho reaches out for his hand and gently touches his ring finger.

“And two, it feels like we’re married.” Minho says as he looks a little regretfully at how bare Kibum’s ring finger is.

Kibum’s heart skips a beat but he pretends it doesn’t happen. He clears his throat instead and takes hold of Minho’s hand to stop him from fiddling with his bare finger.

“What are you saying, you idiot?”

Truth is, Kibum himself doesn’t know what he’s saying.

“I don’t know, just, when I see my parents together, it reminds me of us.” Minho shares his thoughts out loud.

“So your dad doesn’t pay much attention to your mum either?” Kibum finds himself saying before he can stop himself.

Minho laughs, “He does… he just doesn’t show it in obvious ways. They’ve been together for so long that I guess it’s awkward to still be passionate or romantic at their age? But I know he cares a lot about my mum… his eyes are always on her.”

Kibum knows there’s more to what Minho is saying; He knows that Minho is using his parents as an example to relate to himself, to relate to them. Kibum thinks it’s cute, and more than half of his frustration is gone, but he still can’t stop himself from complaining about their situation.

“But we’re so young, Minho!” Kibum grumbles, “It’s too early for us to be like this…”

“We’ve been together for 5 years, bum.”

“I know… I just… I don’t know.” Kibum really doesn’t know what he expects Minho to do.

“Come here,” Minho says as he circles his arm around Kibum’s waist and pulls him closer.

Kibum sighs as he leans into Minho’s warmth and kisses him, much to Minho’s surprise.

When Minho gives him a questioning look, Kibum shrugs and slides his hand around the nape of Minho’s neck, fingers caressing his sensitive skin.

“I’m sorry that you have to put up with me like this…” Kibum mutters an apology for throwing a tantrum, “I should probably get your phone back for you.”

Just as Kibum is about to move off the bed, Minho holds him still by tightening his hug around Kibum.

“Don’t bother…” Minho says, “And don’t be sorry. I know why you’re frustrated, Kibum, I’m sorry I made you feel that way, but you should know, I’m not taking what we have for granted.”

“I know you’re not.” It honestly isn’t Kibum’s intention to make this any of Minho’s fault and so he reassures him before continuing to admit, “I guess I just miss how it was like when we first started dating...”

Minho nods, thinking to himself for a moment before he decides out loud, “Alright then!”

“What?”

“I’m going to…” Minho stops himself as he grins at Kibum and simply ends with, “You’ll know soon.”

Kibum is left very confused by the end of their conversation. But Minho is right. In the next few days, he comes to understand what Minho has decided.

His darling of a boyfriend begins putting effort into their relationship again. Minho starts being more affectionate with him in public, making sure he’s always walking beside him on the streets and not holding back one bit as he openly leans against him when they’re resting. Minho even starts taking the camera from him and offering to take his photos. These are among the little things that show Kibum how much Minho loves him. And he can’t be more thankful to have a boyfriend that spoils and care for him the way Minho does.

Of course, Kibum knows that he can’t just leave it to Minho to keep their romance alive. And Kibum is more than happy to make the effort too… just not so much in public. Kibum does what he does best (knowing exactly what Minho loves) - he spices things up in the bedroom.

By the end of their Latin America trip, Kibum no longer has complaints about where their relationship is. In fact, he finds himself falling in love with Minho all over again.
