Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. :)
On 27th November this year (2023), Punjabis celebrated the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism. It is an occasion of celebration and prayer consisting of Prabhat Pheris (= Morning Processions); singing Hymns; recital of the Katha (=story); followed by Langar, a special community lunch arranged by volunteers at various Gurudwaras (= temple). Night prayer sessions are also held in some Gurudwaras.
