Prologue: I have been meaning to write a series about Holidays and Observances that we (my family and friends) follow in both India (my birth country) and USA (my adopted country). This series is dedicated to those. On a side note, perhaps I might witness some of the celebrations from other countries as well that may get their way into this series. :)
In North India, this year (2023) on October 31st Karwa Chauth was celebrated by all the married women and unmarried women in the hopes of getting married. They observe fast for the safe health of their families, originally was done for their husbands.
There are several legends behind the festival. But it is a festival bringing communities together when women meet at the end of the day, ending their fast, performing the traditional pooja (= ritual), dancing and concluding with a huge feast.
Here is a pic from the event my cousin attended this year.
